I`m trying to find my grandfather Albert Tebbutt born c1888 but I don`t know where.I have his marriage certificate which confirms his age and his middle name was William.He married Jennie Bullivant in Nottingham.Alberts fathers name on the marriage certificate was James.Having checked the census records I appear to be stuck.I can`t link a James Tebbutt with an Albert.On the census of 1891 there is an Albert Tebbutt[Nephew] living in Northamptonshire with Abraham Lewis born Wilby 1857 and Ann Lewis born 1860 in Bozeat.It states on this census that Albert was born c1888 in Earls Barton.Can anyone tell me the link between Albert and the Lewis family as I`ve failed to find one.This has to be my last try as I don`t know where else to go.Carol.

i would get the bullivant childrens birth certs and check fathers name

as on all my grandmothers sibling certs my g grandmother has used different names eg ellen, helen and even eleanor.

her name was ellen but a bit confusing he may have used his middle name as his 1st name

So ... I always suspect a surname change as a result of a mother's marriage or remarriage.

That Albert looks like a child of hers before marriage, or in a first marriage. No Albert Tebbutt was born in that vicinity in that period.

The father's name given on the marriage certificate was then commonly a combination of the stepfather's surname (if that's the surname the child was using) and the real father or grandfather's given name.



Not saying this is your Albert -- that would be a long shot. Just an example of a common situation that could be the cause of your problem. ;)

So was Sarah Ann Smith Tebbutt the Sarah A. Smith married to James in the 1881?

That could explain the father's name on Albert's birth certificate.

Illegitimate -- or the child of his mother's first marriage, which is what he would be if the people I have fixated on were yours. ;)

In that case he would have been born Albert Smith, but with his father dying soon after his birth and his mother remarrying before long, he was just reared as a Tebbutt -- by this theory, which is one of probably many possible theories!

I'd be very tempted to get that Albert Smith 1887 Sleaford birth certificate if I were you.

my grandmother was born under her mothers maiden name as she was illegitimate but used her fathers name all her life including her marriage cert, took me years to find her birth entry

I don't think you've said what occupation was stated for your Albert Tebbutt's father James on Albert's marriage certificate.

In 1901, Robert Tebbutt was a bricklayer.

In 1881, James Smith was an agricultural labourer.

Very very common, Lorraine! My grx3 grandmother in one family had a child before marriage under her own surname -- but there's a father named (whom I've never been able to locate).

The child is with her grandparents under that surname in her first census, but with her mother and stepfather in the next, under his surname, and goes on to marry under that surname. I keep wondering whether I'll meet descendants and have to tell them that while we're both Kennys, they ain't Campions. ;)

Then there were people like my gr-grfather Littler (who apparently dallied with the Ku Klux Klan briefly here in Canada). He was younger than my gr-grmother and married her when she had a 4-year-old (by her employer or his son, where she was a housemaid, as we understand it -- the surname being the girl's middle name). The girl never got to use her stepfather's surname, wasn't included in family photos, never married and was literally pathologically shy, although a doting aunt to my mum's family and then me and my eldest boy cousin before she died.

And they talk about wicked stepmothers ...

I think there's a really good chance, given the names and places and dates, that this is your Albert.

Can you tell us what your Albert's father's occupation was, on Albert's marriage certificate? We can check that against James Smith's and Robert Tebbutt's occupations.
