Hi Janey,
Can't believe you have done all this for me- what effort!
Bit confused now though;
Elizabeth Susan Chudley is really Life or Prout??
born illegitimately to Life, Prout, Chudley?
Which certs and of whom do you suggest.
Apologies for being a bit not with it!

The PROUT birth certificate -- that's the only one we know of at present. ;)

Unfortunately, my bet is that it isn't going to name a father. But until we know what it says, we don't know which direction to go in. Gotta at least know who the mother was first!

I have to remember this now. It's actually the second time in just a short while when someone was looking for Jane Smith who, I found, turned out to have been born Jane Smith Brown. I was perfectly familiar with

- children born outside marriage getting their biological father's surname as a middle name (one of my mother's aunts is an example)

- children born outside marriage reverting/switching to their biological father's surname as adults

-- just gotta remember to put the two things together when I'm hunting for someone!

So order up the Elizabeth Susan Chudley Prout birth cert and report back -- I'm mighty curious myself. ;)

I've also been waiting nearly 6 weeks now for a certificate I ordered at the beginning of August, so I won't hold my breath.

Oops, I forgot -- you don't have the marriage certificate yet, do you?

The Chudley-Prout marriage certificate and the Prout birth certificate both, then. Those will be your starting points!

And just in case there was an error in the GRO entry, I'd order the marriage certificate in the Goode name only.

Hello Karen, The son of my gg grandfather (Edward) was Thomas Goode who I am pretty sure married an Elizabeth S Chudley. In the 1891 census my widowed gg grandfather was staying with Thomas and Elizabeth at 46 Essex St. I have ordered the marriage cert. so that should clear things up when it arrives.
