Why do you think Scotland? Looking at the census I have the impression that his mother, Ellen, remarried a Hankey.

I had the 1871 census with Thomas and Ellen as a very possible but couldn't link Thomas Dockyard Labourer to Thomas Letter Carrier as stated on Richards Marriage Cert. This is now looking as though it is the one.

I still can't find where Richard is later on or pinpoint his birth but have found through looking for other ellusive people that the way to find them is to investigate the people around them.

Presuming the 1871 census is correct .. I can find all the older children born in Whitechapel, London but the youngest 2 Thomas and Richard born St Georges in the East, Middlesex I can't find no matter how I look for them.

The ages do not tie between the above census' and Ellen is shown in 1871 as being born in Waterford, Ireland and then in 1891 Whitechapel London but there is so much that is right about the rest of the information it still makes me think it is right ?!

Is your birthplace for Richard dependent on the 1871 census? If so he may have been born elsewhere.

I have searched for a Richard Burns born in St George's East and in just Middlesex but am pretty new to this and not sure where to look next.

I just don't know where else to go on this one. I've been looking for letter carrying Thomas's with no luck. Have you found Richard's death index? That cert might have a date of birth (I'm not sure when they started doing that) which maybe some time to start.

Thanks for your time in looking. I have searched the deaths on genes page by page and none of the Richard Burns tie with either age or place.

I'm really stuck as to where to go next .. his wife Margaret Richards is just as ellusive.
