George Bamford born 1835 Liverpool, Lancashire

He joined the 95th Regiment of Foot in 1855 at Liverpool and served in the mutiny in India from 1857 to 1867.

His regiment then returned to England and I was hoping some one might have a look in the 1871 census and see if he is there.

In the past his surname has been mistranscribed as Bumford.

I have him in the 1841 census and the 1851 census living with his brothers, I think by 1851, his parents Thomas & Ellen had died.

Thank you
Jan (in Australia)

Thank you for looking.
Maybe,...George ended up going to Australia as promised in his letters to his brother? Now I need to find if he did.!
Is there any way I can find if he went to Oz? at that time?

Jan said 113 Scotland Rd was uninhabited in 1871. The ref no she gave took me to the even side of the road.
We will have to see if Jan can work out the odd side

Hi Jan

first of all, I would like to apologise for giving you the wrong info yesterday. I stupidly thought when I found 112-118 as uninhabited that 113 was included. I had been on computer for a while ;-)

I have now found the correct address. It seems to cover 113,115 & 117.The entry has the following people, but still no George.

Hi Jeanette,

Thank you so much for clarifying an easy mistake.

So am I to asume from your last entry, that the above information is from the 1861 census?
I note you have 34 TOBACCONIST SHOP

I do know that George's occupation before he joined the army, was Tobacconist as was his father ,Thomas.
So can you tell me any names from the 1861 census from 113 Scotland Rd Liverpool?
thank you
Jan

Jeanette

Jeanette Report 27 Jul 2008 12:23

And this isn't him?

Deaths Dec 1866
BAMFORD George 31 Liverpool 8b 32

You KNOW he was at Scotland Rd or it's family legend?

Jan

Jan Report 28 Jul 2008 11:10

Hi Ozibird

I dont know if this is him..guess it is another cert. I will have to buy?
In his discharge papers from the army, his place of address, that he was going to, was 113 Scotland Rd, Liverpool...
I just hope it isn't his death...he was in the Indian mutiny and went through so much..typical me...I was hoping for a happy ending....

Jeanette
Thank you so much for the 1861 census information.
I will need to look into this a little further.

Just hate to think that George went through so much in India and wanted so much to go to his brother James in Oz.
I find it amazing that I can feel so much for someone I hadn't even met, who is related and didn't even know about but know of their history, through an amazing relative who thought to keep these letters from almost 150 years ago...
So sad...I think I will need to buy this cert for the death of George Bamford, so I can finish this part of his life....
