Lord, Dawn, I don't know what more anybody could say.

The only way you are going to get the date of the month when she was born is to order her birth certificate.

And the only way you're going to find out whether she had any children is to get your own subscription to Ancestry and read through the pages of the General Register Office index, quarter by quarter, for the years after her divorce, looking to see whether she married again.

And then do it again, looking for the births of children with the name of her new husband and mother Terry.

And meanwhile, hope that if she did have children she was married to the father, because otherwise you don't have the proverbial snowball's chance.

Because really, nobody else is likely to do that for free.

But if you prefer to wait for magic, you can do that too.

Oh, Dawn.

It's Jessie's BIRTH certificate you need.

Her BIRTH certificate will TELL you her date of birth.

Her birth certificate is THE ONLY WAY you are going to find out what her date of birth is.

When you KNOW her date of birth, THEN you can see whether there is a death that matches it.

JaneyCanuck Report 10 Jul 2008 00:53

Dawn.

Go here:

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

-- look in the lower left and click on "Search".

Then select "births" at the top.

for surname, put Terry
for mother's surname, put Kirk

click "Find" in the lower right.

You will see a total of 5 births from 1912 to 1928, in Marylebone and Pancras registry districts, with surname Terry and mother Kirk.

I would *guess* that the 1914 birth in Marylebone is a brother of your Jessie, if that is the right Jessie.

I would suspect that the 1920-1928 births in Pancras are another couple. But they could be children of your Jessie's parents. The only way to know is to order one of the birth certificates.

Now, your Terry & Kirk married in 1909. They could have had children before Jessie.

Do a new search at FreeBMD.

Search for

births
surname Terry
district St Marylebone
years 1909 to 1912

(You pick the district out of the list on the right)

You will see two Terry births before 1912. They could very well be sisters of your Jessie too.

Again, you simply have to get the birth certificates -- which have the parents' names -- to know for sure.

This information is all available *free of charge* and very easily at FreeBMD. It's the work that needs to be done if you want to find the answers to your questions.

And it's work that you can do for yourself! You're the one who will have to order the birth certificates, so you need to check the information even if someone else tells you what it is.

So Dawn -- did you order her birth certificate?

If you actually want to find some answers, that's what you'll start with.

If you think answers are going to drop into your lap by magic, well, just keep on asking the question!

Take the info I copied for you -- her birth record.

You need this info from it:

quarter
year
names
district
volume no.
page no.

It's all there.

Go to the link I gave you for the GRO.

Do the payment stuff -- you need some kind of card to pay with.

When it asks you whether you have the GRO reference, you say "yes" -- that's the volume and page number business.

Just fill out the info in the form, as per the list above, with the info I copied for the birth of Jessie E Terry.

Submit it all, and you should have the certificate in a week or so, as I understand it. (Takes two weeks to Canada, but they might still be backed up.)

The only date you need to order the certificate is Year + Quarter (jan-feb-mar 1912). You need the certificate to get the actual date. ;)

How do i get the full dates then ?

Dawn -- there is absolutely no way of knowing whether she had children after her divorce, without knowing what surname they would have been registered in. Births can only be searched for by the surname of the child.

I recommend trying to find her death first, to be sure of her surname when she died.

If she died before 1984, that won't be easy.

To find a marriage after her divorce, someone who pays for access to Ancestry has to download four images for each year, and search the Bakers for a Jessie E getting married in a likely place. That would give her new surname.

Then someone would have to do the same thing -- download four images (or more) for each year, and search for children with the new surname and mother Baker.

Or she might have not married, and she might have had children and registered them under (a) her first married surname, (b) the surname of the father, or (c) her birth surname. This possibility means that the search wouldn't just be time-consuming, it might be completely pointless! if you didn't even know what surname to be looking for.

Get the birth cert, and then we'll talk!

Oh, I meant to explain --

Anybody who has posted in this thread will see it up at the top of their own "My Threads" list any time you put any new info in it. It will also get bumped back up to the top of the Trying to Find board.

(If you see "remove this filter" over on the left of your screen, click on it. You'll see the whole Trying to Find board that we're looking at, not the board for just one surname, in case that's where you put the post.)

When you do that, you might also change the subject line (use the "edit" link in your first post).

I would make it

Jessie Elizabeth Baker 1912 - New Info

-- once you have new info -- so other people might be more likely to look at it too.

Dawn -- have you deleted all the other threads? One post per topic. Otherwise, people waste their time. Just click on "my threads" on the left hand side, and then open each thread and click on "delete" in the lower right of your first post, and the entire thread will be deleted.

My recommendatinon is: get her birth certificate so you have her exact date of birth.

Name: Jessie E Terry
Year of Registration: 1912
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Mother's Maiden Name: Kirk
District: St Marylebone (1902-1977)
County: Greater London, London
Volume: 1a
Page: 1036

With that info, you can order the certificate for 7 pounds on line from:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates

Then bring the birthdate info back to your thread here, and a search of the death index can be done for starters. (She may have died before 1984, of course.)

Particularly because a birth registered in Q1 1912 could have happened in late 1911, it's important to have her birthdate.

What I meant to say -- if you get her birth certificate, it will give you her exact date of birth.

The death index after 1984 can be searched by given name and date of birth alone, without a surname.

That way, if she did remarry so you don't have her surname, it might be possible to identify a possibility for her death. With the surname, a matching marriage could be searched for -- a much more time-consuming process, before 1984, involving searching through the images on line.

Dawn -- you're looking for info about her after her children last saw her?

Born in 1912, the odds are very high that she has died.

The birth date on this death record is slightly off, but the name and location fit.

Name: Jessie Elizabeth Baker
Birth Date: 7 Nov 1912
Death Registration Month/Year: Jul 1986
Age at death (estimated): 73
Registration district: Gravesend
Inferred County: Kent
Volume: 16
Page: 828

Sometimes the people who report deaths don't know the correct date of birth. It could be she was born in November 1911 and her birth registered in early 1912, for example, and was thought to be a year younger than she was.

Getting the death certificate could tell you something -- possibly an address or family member's name -- that would rule that death out, or confirm it as your Jessie.
