Birth registration was not compulsory until 1875

Forgot to mention that his fathers name is William and his occupation in 1883 was a Druggist.

Only the child's name is on the index..............have you tried looking for it on freebmd?

This man was dead before 1861........so his 'occupation' in 1883 is hardly relevant...........

Thanks for your help unfortunately I have this info and have a copy of the marriage certificate between William and Ellen which states that his occupation was a porter and not a druggist.

So the son told fibs when he married......not the first, and probably not the last!

the only Young/Maggs marriage I can find is Aaron Young and Constance Maggs in 1850

Wendy, not up to date with what everything means, does it give names of parent for George Ernest Young or is that the same one that you posted after?

no only that his mother's maiden name is Maggs

just realised you say his fathers name is William.do you know if he had any siblings?

can't find a george with father william with that occupation or even close, you may be unfortunate and george might have 'made up' a father to save embarrassment

Sorry Wendy this is where I come unstuck. I have a marriage certificate for a George E Young which records his father William as being a druggist. He married in1883 and was 26years old I know that George was definately born in Bath, Somerset.
I thought that I had a link and bought a marriage cert for a William Young thinking it was his father only to find out that the William on the cert was a porter and died in 1860.
On George,s marriage cert it does not have deceased next to his fathers.
Does this all make sense to you?

It does make sense but there are only two George Youngs born in the bath area.
It was quite common for people to invent a father if they didn't have one.Also occupations did change alot my great grandfather had a different job each time one of his children were born. Another thought is he could have put his dad's middle name down.I have a gtgt grandfather who couldn't decide if his name was william or george!he cost me lots of money trying to track him down.

He may not have mentioned that his father was deceased.

My mother put her father down on her marriage cert - plus his occupation. By the time she married her father had been dead for 20 years. That wasn't mentioned.
