Not necessarily. The informant might not have known his true birth year. Have you looked for his birth record?

There is this one in Leicestershire for around that time:

i have looked but the only one showing that could be a possible is with the mmn being gale
and i believe his mother was ellen moore.
and he his only down as sydney on there
i am starting to think he was adopted now,
the mined boggles.

the date that i have sydney as being born was the 27 sep 1920 anstey which would have come under barrow upon soar reg district.

There are no Sydney Prestons in the whole of England between 1911 and 1930, with mmn of Moore. He may not have been born in England of course. Have you tried Mrs Tibb's post on this board; she has access to findmypast - I think - and that has military and overseas births of UK citizens.

Do you have a marriage certificate? That might show two surnames - my grandmother's did and she was adopted.

i don,t have a marraige cert for him but believe he may of married a dorothy frith.
i mighg have to see about asking one of his sister that is if she is still with us. last i heard she was very poorly.

See if Mrs Tibbs can help. She is a marvel at winkling out people.

Nothing is coming up for a Preston married to Ellen Moore for that year but you only need her name to buy the cert

she married frank preston on 7 aug 1916
i have that marraige .

looks like the ref numbers are diffrent one say 510 the other 310
