I have a copy of a birth certificate for Hubert Firkins born 6th October 1841 in Hereford his father name is Oonas Tranter mother's name Dianna Tranter formerly Firkins her address was 29 Burcot Row St Johns
Any information on Oonas would be most appreciated

Are you sure it say's Oonas? I can't find any reference to him at all. How come the child was a Firkins if his parents were married and named Tranter?

On the birth certificate it definatly says Oonas as it is a printed version from the Hereford Registry Office on the certificate it says

This appears to be Hubert's marriage, just a pity that both females have similar names. It would be interesting to see who he named as his father.

Hubert's name on his birth certificate is Hubert Firkins Tranter - children's surnames aren't given on birth certs, but inferred from the name of the father (or mother if no father's named).
His Christian names are given as Hubert Firkins.

As Diana reverted to the surname of Firkins it looks as though she wasn't married to his father. I would guess the father's real name might be Jonas; presumably it was hard to read and the Hereford RO have mistranscribed it.

You could always get Hubert's brother's birth cert to see what father's name is given, but it probably has no father named as he's listed with the surname of Furkins, and has Tranter as a middle name:

I would guess that Diana never married Tranter, he died or disappeared and she took up with James Hiley. Odd that they never got married, though.

I can't find a baptism for Diana under any of her likely surnames.

Mary you correct on the certificate it says

No, I think it's the same person in view of the unusual names. I would think Diana took up with James Hiles, and the children then used his surname, although they never married. Hubert would have been too young to remember his father, so he may even have believed that James was his real father.

It is unusual that Tranter's name is on the birth certificate if they weren't married, though. You might try contacting the Records Office and ask if they can find a bastardy order (an order for Tranter to pay maintenance for Diana's illegitimate children).

I have just been in touch with Hubert's gt gt Grandaughter, Mavis James and she says that Hubert had two brothers Thomas and Henry but she is not sure if Henry's real name was Herbert she can remember her Aunt refuring to one of them as Herbie

She has no birth certificate's for Huberts brothers so the name of thier Father is not yet known untill a certificate is aquired

I doubt if it is Enock but he may well be a relation
