I have a copy of a birth certificate for Hubert Firkins born 6th October 1841 in Hereford his father name is Oonas Tranter mother's name Dianna Tranter formerly Firkins her address was 29 Burcot Row St Johns |

Are you sure it say's Oonas? I can't find any reference to him at all. How come the child was a Firkins if his parents were married and named Tranter? |

Hubert's name on his birth certificate is Hubert Firkins Tranter - children's surnames aren't given on birth certs, but inferred from the name of the father (or mother if no father's named). |

No, I think it's the same person in view of the unusual names. I would think Diana took up with James Hiles, and the children then used his surname, although they never married. Hubert would have been too young to remember his father, so he may even have believed that James was his real father. |

It is unusual that Tranter's name is on the birth certificate if they weren't married, though. You might try contacting the Records Office and ask if they can find a bastardy order (an order for Tranter to pay maintenance for Diana's illegitimate children). |

I have just been in touch with Hubert's gt gt Grandaughter, Mavis James and she says that Hubert had two brothers Thomas and Henry but she is not sure if Henry's real name was Herbert she can remember her Aunt refuring to one of them as Herbie |
