ok - didn't follow "thread" stuff just cause of not using site enough. Will try to be better at it. I see what you mean on the main page ... I see more discussions. Didn't know I did that! We are getting birth records in the mail - thanks

like Deborah says, you are doing great and I have added to one of your threads, the only thing is that by having three threads the information is spread all over the place and people can't see what has already been found. Nothing more!! and of course you will have three threads to keep track of and try to assimilate the information

There is also someone else on the boards doing research on Ithiel - seems to be a popular one!

One can buy a certificate, either online thru the GRO:
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
The cost is 7 GBP, incl post. (One can pay by credit card, and the GRO bills Visa or whomever, and Visa convert it to local currency at a mildly unfavourable rate to you, then stick it on your bill.)
One can also buy the cert thru the local Register Office.
Manchester take orders over the phone, plus credit card details. They charge 7GBP, plus 1 GBP handling fee, plus postage. (The UK is 5-8 hours ahead, depending where in the US you are. NY=5 LA=8)
Tel: 0161-234-5535 (I forget how to call a UK number)

what's an ancestry sub? (add a "duh"...) I don't use this site to it's max - I think it's related to the hours in a day! thanks!

Heather

Heather Report 4 Nov 2008 22:39

Darby, do you have an ancestry sub?

Also, read the Tips for Newbies which gives you some of the sites you can use. (I love his name as Ethal on that 1871 census)

Darby

Darby Report 4 Nov 2008 22:34

Thanks to everyone for all your brilliant ideas. My husband is extremely excited and when we visit England over Christmas, perhaps we will have a place for him to discover some ancestry - I found mine - so happily - on this site. Interestingly, our ancestors are from the same region! Such a very small world. Thank you everyone again - Darby Patterson (Darby, Slater, Tarbuck, Botts and Smith families)

The cost of ordering a certificate is the same anywhere in the world ....... £7, but of course that has to be translated into local currency. I'm not sure what the US exchange rate is at the moment. It'll probably cost you around $20US (it would be about $15 for me up here in Canada).

Go to www.gro.gov.uk, click on Ordering Certificates Online, follow instructions. Answer YES when asked if you have the GRO number ...... that's the set of two numbers at the end of the entry posted by Julie

NEVER pay more than £8 (asked by some local Registry Offices) for a certificate. There are companies offering to get them for you, and they are a total rip-off.

NEVER pay for credits on this site to access official documents such as censuses and other records. It is by far the most expensive way to do your research.

The reason you have not found Ithiel's name on here is simply that no-one has entered his name on their family tree. All names other than those in the official records are a result of ordinary GR members like yourself entering information on the trees.

Julie seems to have found his birth. If you send for the birth certificate (you can do it online but not sure of the cost from the USA) you will find out his fathers name which will help you in your search.
