Hit a brick wall with Crook's

I have come to a standstill on a search and any help or advice would be great. I originally became stuck with my great grandfather (Charles Crook), but I managed to get his marriage certificate and from there find out who his father was (Frederick Crook). I am now stuck on Frederick. From the 1901 census I see that he was married to Annie (no idea of her maiden name) and that he was born c. 1872 in Exminster, Devon. I would love to find out who his parents were, if he had any brother or sisters and what Annie’s maiden name was. Frederick’s profession in 1901 census was listed as male attendant, anyone any idea what this is?

I cant find him on a later census for some reason.

To find Annie's maiden name, go to freebmd website and look for possible marriage............or buy the the birth cert of one of the children (more reliable).

What was Frederick's occupation stated to be when his son married?

Are you 100% certain that the Frederick you have located on 1901 is the correct person?

When was Charles born? His birth cert would be worth getting...........to eliminate any possible doubts.

There isn't a later census...........1911 will not be made available to the public for some time yet................

It seems too good a match not to be. I have Charles Crook as his son on 1901 which matches my marraige cert and professions match.

Sorry when i said later I actually meant earlier!!

On the marraige cert I have for Charles it said he married in 1923 and he was age 27

Emily

Emily Report 7 May 2008 14:33

Reggie, Frederick's occupation on Charles' marriage cert was male attendant. Also noticed a few spelling mistakes in my last entry!!!!

ErikaH Report 7 May 2008 16:03

OK, so the occupation on the cert matches that on the 1901 census, so it does seem to be the correct family..............posting 1901 purely for reference......

Hi everyone,

I know my last thread on this was some time ago, but I have been ordering birth certs etc and now i have been re-reading my threads for possible matches.

Reggie looking at your info and your mention of a John Frederick T Crook and a Hannah German, I have come across this pair in my research and I still have no idea if they are my Fred and Annie. I have several docs that show MY Frederick Crook as a male attendant at a lunatic asylum. Strangely in a later census John Frederick Thomas Crook is down as an attendant at a lunatic asylum (is this my Fred?!!). I have Charles' birth cert and I think (writing not great) it says his mother is Hannah German. I am so confused and wondering who is who!!! Any help would be great

It looks like he is your Fred

Thanks Sablon,

I think it must be as well, there are too many links to think it is someone else. Lots of people tell me that (confusingly) people sometimes put the name they use rather than the name they were given on census info.

well, you have the marriage to Hannah ,so it must be the right one,and the birth cert for charles should have his fathers name

Emily

re census returns. You're right about people putting the names they were known by or used as opposed to their "official" names. Seems quite common practice. The censuses were for statistical purposes - it mattered little to the enumerator (or anyone else) what names went down as what was wanted from the census info was info on numbers of people in the area, whether the population was growing, shrinking, ageing, getting younger etc.

So, be a bit "fluid" in your census searching.

I'll leave it to the helpful helpers to see who wasted how much time.
