A drill man is an agricultural worker who operated a seed drill, could be this

In that case perhaps a driller & a drill man are 2 different occupations

I would suggest that the 'E' is Engineering and the 'M' is probably Mechanical.........

I'm thoroughly confused now........whose occupation are you querying?

Reggie ...sorry ...that is his son in law ...his wife is Isabella nd its her Father Richard and brother that are Drillers ..e&m

It's on the 1881 census, not the 1891.

If you go back a page there is a machinest with E and M written above his occupation. I would think it is probably shorthand for Electrical and Mechanical (just the enumerator categorising the occupations).
