Does anyone remember when the Record Office and Tips boards moved so quickly that you couldn't keep up with threads?

I feel as if the genealogy side of the site is dying a slow death.

Where is everyone? There never seems to be more than a few people on the site at one time. I used to be able to spend all day on the site but now I get bored after 10 minutes.

Is it just me????

You are right of course but what has changed is the "trying to find" board.
Now it is a threaded board you will find that most people use that.

Kath
I remember those times.
I used to be amazed at just how fast people could find information and that's partly what made me subscribe to Ancestry....I wanted to help too.

Glad to see some replies, LOL. Think I'm just feeling fed up because I can't get out much at the moment (waiting for new knees) and I just keep wishing the boards were like they used to be, to keep me occupied.

Kath
You're right, I've noticed a drop off during the last 12 months, most of the time you see a thread on the front page and it's still there some hours/day later and there is still no responses.
Did everyone move across to the other site when it came on line???

Probably because people are subscribing to Ancestry and the like, and doing their own lookups and research.

I remember when new threads were also posted in the wee hours. Now there's nothing.

Kath,

Perhaps you could post some threads offering lookups to keep you busy. I wonder how many responses there would be for FreeBMD and 1881 census lookups. :-)

I thought it was just me!!

I'm usually on here late in the evening or during the night UK time ....... 'cos I live in Canada!

I used to find lots of things to work on at those times ...... not so much now.

Hi Lisa

I haven't found your threads yet!! lol

I do know a lot of the "oldies" have left, they lost interest or were frustrated at what was happening a few months ago.

There is a lot of activity on the TTF ..... but so much of it is almost incoherent. I'm not really being rude, but some of the threads are really difficult to understand, and they provide so little information on which to work.

Now to go and see if I can find your threads!!!

One other thing

there are a lot more people having threads offering look-ups

I wonder if people wanting help go on those threads rather than posting on the open board??

Just a thought

I think it's changed since the Chat turned into another General board (if you get what I mean)
Late at night I often pop in just to see if anyone wants a look up but these days after 12ish it's as dead as a dodo.

I've been around for a few years, and remember well how the boards used to be.

It was lunacy on GR's part to 'thread' the trying to find board.

I never look at it..................

Nowadays there is an abundance of people asking for lookups for bmd info for the years not covered by the transcribed records...........usually with absolutely no clue as to which year the event occurred...........they just seem unaware of what is involved in such searches..............

There seems also to be an increase in the number of people who ask for help..........and never bother to look at the info..............

You might gather from this that I'm somewhat disillusioned.........

I have gone as far as I can with my tree and for the last couple of years I have logged on to this site just to help others with their research but as you are all saying it is dieing a slow death so will probably not bother renewing my membership when it runs out

Kath it's got quieter in the short time that I've been venturing on to Records.

Sylvia you could be right about people using the threads offering to do lookups, lots of really, really old threads of this type get dug up from time to time. Nothing against the folk that put up this type of thread but I always feel that a few pairs of eyes on a problem are better than one.

Reg I agree TTF is just a mess, if GR specified clearly what each board should be used for life would be so much easier.

Untranscribed BMD's I'm afraid I just explain what's involved & suggest they take out Ancestry subs although I've been shocked to see lookup requests answered on minors.

Is there a new series of WDYTYA due?

That usually livens things up for a while :)

I wonder if the London show in May will have the same affect? I can't remember if it did last year.

The snag with that wretched programme is that it gives the uninitiated the ridiculous impression that finding 200 years of family history - fully documented - takes only a few hours!
