help please i have tried and tried on ANCESTRY, FREE BMD and everywere else your my only hope i bin looking on and orf for two years, for RICHARD JAMES NETTLETON born 1872 he married CATHERINE ELLEN LEWIS in 1895 reg office haverfordwest married at st catherines church milford haven pembrokeshire on the wedding cert his dad is also richard james nettleton the one am looking fvor says he was from milford but i think he was just based there he was a royal engineer as was his dad cud someone please trace the man or i will have to go see a medium :-O

my uncle trevor said we had rellies in gibraltar cud they have just put he was born in gibraltar but have been born in milford i got his birth record off free bmd just strange the litle girl aged 2 is catherine

I BET AGNES IS THE MUM THOUGH IT DOESNT STATE IT ON THE CENSUS ON ancestry just says visitor

Although bmds started in September quarter 1837, it was not COMPULSORY to register a birth until about 1875.

Before 1875, the birth was supposed to be registered, but it depended on whether there was a registrar in the community, whether the registrar came to visit the home (that was supposed to happen at one time), whether the mother had to visit the registrar, etc etc etc.


Sooooooooooo ......... there are many babies that didn't get registered.


This could be the reason why you can't find him.


You might have to go looking at parish records to see if you can find a record of his baptism.

I have been reading back through your post.......... how do you come up with birth year of 1872 if you don`t have the birth cert or any details?.....Place of birth isn`t on a marriage cert...only residence at the time of marriage. Where he was living at time of marriage could be a completely different place to where he was born . Iv`e had a quick look on Ancestry census and can find no one who matches your details with a father of the same name, most of the Richard Nettertons seem to have been born in Yorkshire. I see there are 2 marriages for Richard Netterton on freeBMD in 1895 in Wales, are you sure you have the correct certificate ? Please post all the info you have on this man and his family and hopefully we can help you with your search.

Apologies...... getting Pontypridd mixed up with Pontefract....must be past my bed time.....so only 1 Richard Netterton marriage in Wales in 1895. Found a Richard Netterton born 1876 Pontefract on 1881 census....fathers name John.

I think Shirley thinks the 1896 Richard born Gibralter is the son she has the birth registry for {a year after the marriage}..... but the mother appears to be Agnes, and Richard married a Catherine Ellen....didn`t he?.....very confusing, glad your puzzled as well..... thought it was just me...lol

If you multimap Gibraltar, Lincolnshire it's near Burgh Le Marsh, Lincs but not even a hamlet. I think it's doubtful that is what is meant. The Rock off the coast of Spain is more likely.
