Would anyone be able to find William Stobbart (born 1861 in South Shields) in 1871 census?
I have him on 1881 with mother Isabella (widow) (born c1832 in Whickam, Durham) living in Westoe, Durham. I also have 1891 and 1901 with wife Mary Jane and children. I haven't been able to find him on 1871 or find his mother on 1861.
Any help would be appreciated.

That looks like them......thanks Keith. Robert is also with them in 81. There is no father with them. Does it say whether Isabella is a widow?

Sorry Keith ....just read the widow part.

Julie

Julie Report 10 Mar 2008 19:58

1871 says Isabella was born Dunstan Northumberland, 1861 says Dunstan Durham. Would that just be a mistake?

KeithInFujairah

KeithInFujairah Report 10 Mar 2008 19:58

Probably Julie. Dunstan is Northumberland, registration district Alnwick.

Julie - Keith has a sneaky habit of posting the census... then editing with the occupation and Marital status... and he always beats me to it!!!!!

Do you know Isabella's husband's name? If he was at sea, he should have appeared on a Vessels census return...

Julie - I don't know what the rules on Vessels censuses were... probably only British registered ships.. I haven't seen Thomas in 1861... :(

I had a few mariners in my tree, and found quite a few on vessels census returns, and also Navy personnel onboard ship were recorded on Vessels returns.... you get to find the name of the ship and their rank!!
