I am still reluctant to link Rebecca to mr grx4 grandfather although the circumstantial evidence is fairly strong. Next month I will visit Dorchester where I might uncover more. If I do, I will update this thread.

Thank you all for your kindness.

At last, the mystery of Rebecca is solved. She did come from Stinsford and she died in Melcombe Horsey in 1841. The reason I could find her on the Dorset OPC site is that she is missing from the transcription! I found her on the Bishops Transcripts microfiche in the Family History Centre in London.

My sincere thanks to all who responded.

Just to update things ... I have still not got beyond George down my Vincent line. I have accepted that his wife Rebecca (Rebekkah) was born in Stinsford and the Chamberlain line goes back from there through the Bishops' Transcripts. The family were cordwainers.

Rebecca's mother was a Bishop and there are dozens of those nearby in Fordington (on the outskirts of Dorchester) and there are connections back to Long Bredy.

Last summer we cycled all round the area as part of the annual Dorset Historic Churches Trust fundraiser. We started at Melcombe Horsey where George married Rebecca (and where he's buried) and passed through Dewlish (loads of Vincents there!), Milborne st Andrew where George's son James found his wife Martha Gover and on to beautiful Stinsford (where Thomas Hardy's heart is buried in the churchyard).

An amazing day.
