Hello can anyone help please. On the 1841 Census for
the Borough of Lambeth,Hamlet of Peckham ,Parish of Camberwell is listed a Katherine Hershey aged 9 years born in Foreign parts as it has a tick besdie her name. Catherine is staying with the Boughton family-Stockbrokers. I do have the Census and spent almost one hour last night zooming in and out on Catheine Hershey,s name giving myself a stiff neck in the process. Some have suggested the surname is Henky but I dont agree with either Hershey or Henky. The last three letters of Catherines surname seems to be...egy. The last two letters being
g and y have loops on them. Looking at the Census and trying to understand the lettering with other names the first letter of the surname could be ..h or ..k. Can anyone with a good eye help with this one.

Marion,

How is the "name" listed on the index? Who is she residing with?

Joan Thankyou.
The name is listed as Cathine Hershey. With her is Harriett Ackley born about 1826. They are staying with the Boughton family Harriett and Thomas-Stockbrokers. Harriett Ackley is down as Female Servant. Catherine what ever is down as relative to Harriett.

Ok thanks Lewella. If your still around take a look at the last two letters of the surname. They both loop at the bottom. I also have the info for the marriage but thanks anyway. I am ending the surname ...egy

Henlegy??

What do you WANT it to be??

BTW ......... the tick in the last column is for "born in Scotland, Ireland or Foreign Parts" .......... so she could have been born in any of those 3 areas.

You did notice didn't you the ages of the two girls?

Name Age
Harriet Ackley 15
Catherine Hershey 9

I didn't see anything on the image that showed she was a relative of Harriet ... that's the problem with the 1841, it never does indicate the relationship between people.

But it might be notable that her name precedes Harriet, despite the usual alphabetical listing, and that there is no occupation listed against her name.

Hello Sylvia,
My reply is late back to you so I am most sorry. Work. I have been searching for five years on this one for Harriett and Catherine with no luck. I always check the Census going back to them I mean and the last time is when I noticed the surname spelling for Hershey. I dont want it to be anything its not but the correct name might just be a bonus and help me find my Great Great Grandmother Harriett who is also mentioned on the 1841 Census.

Selena Yes forgot to add she could have been a Grandchild to the Boughtons. I would like to find her in the 1851 Census if possible. I cant believe my luck today. Any chance if your not too busy you could take a look at my Mary Ann Ackley 1841 or am I asking too much?

Marion

do make note of the fact that the information that Selena found for you is a SUBMITTED entry from IGI.

This means it could be false information!

I don't mean to pour cold water on your excitement, but submitted records cannot be trusted ............. they can be a guide but must be treated with great caution.

Hello Marion, I got the census through okay. But haven't found anything else unfortunately.

Who is Mary Ann Ackley? What is her approx year of birth?

Don't want to confuse the issue but here is a possible Henly/Boughton marriage in roughly the right area for Lambeth etc.

Marriages Mar 1842
BARRETT Elizabeth Camberwell 4 17
Bird Golding Camberwell 4 17
BOUGHTON Adino Camberwell 4 17
BRETT Mary Ann Camberwell 4 17
CURRYER Thomas Camberwell 4 17
GOODCHILD Happy Camberwell 4 17
HENLEY Jane Camberwell 4 17
Wing Adolphus Henry Camberwell 4 17

Not sure how this helps at the moment though. Might be useful in the future.
