Hi Mary
It's the International Genealogical Index....free on www.familysearch.org
A word of caution, though...........if the records are 'submitted', they may be less than accurate........
If however, they are 'extracted'. i.e., taken from parish registers, they are more likely to be OK.

OK Reg, many thanks for that and Soph thank you as well, Williams father was Obadiah so unfortunately the William's birth year is correct but not his fathers name. Also may I just ask, what is the "Pedigree" after their names ?
Thank you both

Hopeful. Did you click onto "pedigree". Its just the order of descent. You have the parents ,then the children.
These submitted entries are those put there by Morman members. Mormans believe you have to baptise your dead non Morman relatives into the Morman religion . I think they all are expected to do this. Unfortunately as has been said sometimes, but not always the information has been taken directly from census records.
I have a family member submitted as Elizabeth Do. The Do on the census stood for "ditto"so you can see how inaccurate they can be. However if the info is"extracted" from the parish records then that is okay. Another thing to remember is sometimes on the census things dont add up. Names change, places of birth change. I recently helped to sort out a persons relative who gave her place of birth as Durham on 2 census but the earliest when she was home with parents as a baby she was born in Derby. It seems the baby was born before her mother married so registered in mothers name in Derby. Mother then married shortly after and they moved to Durham.
The girl then used her new fathers name from then on . However she married under her real name.
I explained to the person I was helping the girl had lived in Durham from a few months old so felt or maybe assumed she was born there so put Durham on later census. Each parish were responsible for their own poor. So if you needed parish relief you were sent to the parish where you were born.
If someone had moved parishes they would sometimes lie on the census as to where they were born because they feared being sent back.
