I am trying to find out info about my ancestor Thirza Tarrant. She was born 1852 in Salisbury Wiltshire. I know her father was Thomas Tarrant but cannot find out who her mother was. Thomas Tarrant obviously got married for a second time to Ann Bailey and went onto have eight more children. I know Thirza went to a boarding school in Odiham from the 1861 census and she went to America in 1880's and married out there into the Rathbone family but would love to know more about her and who her mother was. Can anyone help?

Thirza Tarrant b 1851 Dec Q Salisbury Vol 8 Page 433
If you apply for the birth cert it will give you the mothers name
Do you have the marriage cert for Anne Bailey (1860 Dec Q Andover) if so this will show if Thomas was a widower or not
But it is of course possible that Thirza's parents were not married, and this is why she was sent away to a boarding school presumably at Thomas's expense

Having now looked at the image for 1851 I see that Thomas is shown as 26, Carpenter, living in his birthplace of Newton Toney with his mother Sarah, and he shows himself as married, but where was his wife?

I'm going to check the census reports now...

I know! Its all very puzzling. We have copy of a will we found in my grandmothers possessions when she died that was regarding Thomas Tarrants estate and it states in there he had seven sons and three daughters. We know that six of these sons and two of these daughters were by Ann his second wife so he must have not only had Thirza by his first but also another son! Can't find any trace tho. Will have to get Thirza's B Cert I think to trace the mother.

Ok, i can't even find a Thirza Tarrant let alone a Thirza Rathbone in America!!

Gary needs to actually come back to us and tell us how he has this data....

This Iill we found definately states Thirza was living in Amercia. Have also found her death online. She died in California in 1920. Her book she wrote was called Food Reform Cookery. Think she was a victorian vegetarian according to a book written a couple of years ago that refers to her book in this regard.

Hi Tracey
Thanks for your help
Have found Thirza on the USA 1920 census living in california with two children. Her married surname is either Rathbone or Rathbun have. Found her marriage mentioned in the Rathbone Genealogy. The will i refered to states her married surname as Rathbun and that she died in Califonia. Found her death record on line which referred to being a native of England so must be one and the same person.
Would love to fill all the gaps but maybe it isn't meant to be!

If it helps the only extra thing the image states is that she was naturalized in 1890.

Looking at Tarrant deaths between 1851 and 1860, there is no Martha Tarrant but there is a Mary Ann Tarrant who died Andover 1855 Dec Q and also an Eliza Tarrrant who died 1858 Andover, so it seems you will still need to get the birth cert to decide which of the brides in the 1850 marriage is the right one.
The IGI has a Mary Ann Wells 9/3/1823 Ramsbury
Eliza Hayter 8/4/1825 Salisbury

Hi Tracey

Thats the record I've got. My mistake - I've read the children bit wrong. Now I see she was living on her own - thanks for that.
The bit about the father being born in France is the one discrepancy on this census that we can't work out. Weren't sure if they had made a mistake with the mother and father columns as we still don't know who her mother is. Everything else fits. The name Thirza is unusual enough for us to be sure we do have the right one. The copy of the will we have is our biggest clarification. Think will have to get birth cert as next step. Can you advise where to obtain this from? Do you think it woud be possible to find her on a ship list to America?
Thanks for your help
Gary
