I am looking for any info regarding Harriet Swanwick nee Murden born c1809 Ruddington Nottingham she was married to Thomas Swanwick born1806 Keyworth Nottingham, they are shown on 1841 &1851 census then just Thomas in 1861 census in Nottingham union workhouse listed as married not widowed. His death cert shows he died in Nottingham union workhouse 1870 from paralysis; their youngest daughter was born 1849 so she must have died later than this, I have checked the death records and census returns and can find no reference to her after the 1851 census. |

How sure are you that the one in the workhouse was the right Thomas? |

well as sure as I can be -the dob is correct, he was a frame work knitter and lived in that area he was also born in Keyworth that also matches with the workhouse records of 1861 - I do not see any other thomas swanwicks that anyway near match - it would seem he and his wife Harriet were both on the 1851 census together - I also have the wedding cert of his son John in 1857 it dosn't show Thomas as deceased at that time, I know this is not necessarily that he hadn't died but on other certs of the time it usualy would say so, so I think the 1854 death is wrong, many many thanks for taking time for me-- sorry I took so long to reply -its shift work to blame |

I think many of us had relatives who died in the Workhouse. It's not till you start researching different branches of your tree that you realise just how common it was to be in the workhouse, have an illegitimate child, live with someone as man and wife without being married etc. etc. |
