Mel, Thank you so much for this information. It is invaluable to me. I feel a bit stupid as I had entered Dorothy's details into IGI but was told no matches. I have obviously done something wrong! Would it be too much trouvle to ask you to email me and explain the process by which you arrived at these results? That way I wouldn't need to bother people on this site again - or at least not on this topic!

Thank you all for your help. Lucy, that looks like a very promising link to William Stephens and I will pursue that further.
Mel, your christening record looks as if I was right in my original assumption that Dorothy was his mother but I still would love to know where the Sherwin/Sherwer comes form!
May I ask how you found the christening record? Perhaps the next time I can do it myself without needing help.

Andrew, I have now sent for the birth certificate as you are so right that it is the only way to be certain.

Seaham Lass, can you tell me how you narrowed down Victoria's marriage as there were 2 possible men on the page of entry in the record.

Thank you all again and I look forward to some more snippets so that I can do this for myself. You have all been so helpful.

I had to go to church or would have replied straightaway.

I could do with some help please for 2 dead ends in my tree.

William Stephens c 1875 was a merchant seaman. He had a child, Robert Consort Stephens, with Victoria Mary Wilkinson in 1903. She took the name Stephens but never married William. She later married in 1905 but I don't know who. William disappeared and I cannot find any trace of him any where. It is my understanding that without the name of ships he may have been on, I wouldn't be able to get any joy from the merchant navy records. Can anyone help me?

2nd dead end.......

John Sherwin Hartley was born in Sellafield in 1871. His father was John Hartley b1835 also in Sellafield. His parents were Joseph Hartley b 1805, St Bridget's Cumbria and Ann Braithwaite born 1803 in Blackbeck.
I had his mother as Dorothy Jackson born in 1836 and she undoubtedly married a John Hartley in Sep 1865 but I now suspect that she is not the wife or mother I am looking for. She has no Sherwins in her line at all and as it is a fairly common Cumbrian name, I feel sure that there would have been a Sherwin to give John Jr his middle name.

I am fairly new to this and could do with some of your help for which I will be most grateful. Here's hoping........
