Going by the children's names (of William & his wife), which you gave, I'd say the 1911 census information given by Catherine is a good bet.
That's the one at 35 Whalley Road, Northwich, in the county of Cheshire with the wife as Florance.
The original image states that they had 6 children, and 6 were living at that time.

So going by info from "Catherine" , ie mother's maiden name Bates, and "Batman's daughter'" info of marriage index find, I think we can say that is their marriage, and the wife's name was Florence Bates.

Don't understand why 3 deletions already on a thread which isn't even a half hour old. Am I missing summat??!! LOL

Probably just duplicated info, Karen.
If I find a census entry or a bmd, then see that someone was a little quicker than me, I delete my info so there are not too many duplicates on the thread.

The first thing you need to do is buy William's marriage cert. which will give you his father's name and occupation, if known.

The 1873 birth record found by Karen seems to fit with info from 1911 census so, if you want to take a chance, you could buy a copy and see what it says. Normally it should give you his parents names.

If mother is Ann, then the census record I found earlier could well be him. If the record is correct, then Ann would have been only 16 when she had him so maybe he was illegitimate and Ann stated she was widowed to save face.
There is a birth that would fit:-
Births Sep 1853 (98%)
MORTON Ann Dudley 6c 50
there is also a marriage that could fit, so could be she did marry:-
Marriages Sep 1872 (>99%)
CARTER Emily Leek 6b 420
xxxx CHARLES Ann Leek 6b 420
xxxx Morton James Leek 6b 420
Roach Thomas Leek 6b 420
It does cost money but the only way to find out is to buy a couple of certs.

EDIT:-
This marriage record could be worth keeping on file, as there is a death that would fit with the marriage, the birth of daughter on 1881 census and the place they were living in that census:-
Deaths Jun 1876 (>99%)
Morton James 34 Ashton under Lyne 8d 384

but as I said earlier, you need to start with the marriage cert.

Catherine

Catherine Report 22 Mar 2010 17:24

Mary has already said that her father was Frederick Bates (the same one that is with the family in 1911 census).

I also think that 1881 census with Ann,William and Eliza P should be Elliza H.
There was a Eliza Hannah Morten christened St Thomas Hyde Cheshire 1/10/1873 by James and Ann Morten, and that would fit with info from Catherine on Ann Charles marrying James Morten and James dying in 1876.
