Having received my grandparents marriage cert, I thought ?I may find out more on my grandfather, unfortunatly I am still in a pickle. Can anyone help ?
Thomas Metcalfe married Isabel Fisher 13/12/1937 at the time he was a trooped in the Royal dragoon guards. His fatheralso a thomas Metcalfe a coal miner. Thomas (jr) was born around 1915. As Thomas and Metcalfe are popular names in the north I dont want to assume anything.I know they were married in Bishop Auckland and he died in Darlington in 1958 so defiantly a Co Durham born and bread but, so were many other Metcalfe's, I have assumed his mother was a Jane Allen and Thomas maybe had a twin ?? can anyone confirm please?

If he was a twin then this is probably his birth:-

Births Sep 1915 (>99%)
Metcalfe Thomas Allen Sedgefield 10a 342
also
Metcalfe Annabel Allen Sedgefield 10a 341

I presume this is who you think are his parents.

Marriages Mar 1910 (>99%)
Allen Jane Auckland 10a 308
Metcalfe Thomas Auckland 10a 308

Have you found them in 1911 to confirm the occupation of Thomas?

Here is the entry for the Thomas Metcalfe who died in Darlington in 1958. Are you sure that this is your Thomas as his age at death is recorded as 76 which would indicate his birth c1882.

I am only assuming this info as this is what I have found too, also an older sister jemima who passed away in 1920's, but not definalt sure his mother was Jane Allen, I would order a cert if I was sure but I could order a hundred certs before I could be certain this is the right Thomas Metcalfe, Thanks though xx

To Jonesey,
My grandfather Thomas died in his 40's after a fatal accident, suppose the one you have found maybe his father Thomas Metcalfe senior.

Jonsey:
Really not sure as I am assuming that Jane Allen is his mother.
I have found many Thomas Metcalfe births in the Darlington/B'Auckland, and Barnard Castle area. I really dont know which one would be my Thomas Metcalfe. Would contacting the church where he's buried help me ?as I know he's buried in Hipswell in a unmarked grave, as thats where I also layed my fathers ashes.

Catherine:
Dorothy is a new one on me, but then if she was born before the new rule of mothers maiden name on the cert then there may have been more born. will keep Dorothy in mind , thanks

You say Thomas Jr died in his 40's have you found his death?

,

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 2 Aug 2010 09:16

Certainly no harm in contacting the church.

I am still a bit concerned however that I cannot spot a 40 something old Thomas Metcalfe death in Darlington or indeed in Co Durham c1958.

How sure are you that is when he died and of the circumstances of his death? For example have you seen an inquest report or newspaper article giving the details.

The nearest I can find is this one which is fairly close geographically. Deaths are of course registered where they occur not where the deceased was born or lived:

Name: Thomas Metcalfe
Death Registration Month/Year: 1959 march Qtr
Age at death (estimated): 43
Registration district: Cleveland
Inferred County: Yorkshire North Riding
Volume: 1b

Geraldine,
If you are absolutely sure that Jemima was his sister then, as there is only one Jemima, I would buy her birth cert. to see who her parents were, then you'll be sure if Jane Allen was their mother.
