Find Ancestors

Trying to find the birth place of the above in around 1848: we are told it was in the Harz Mountains area of Germany. He came here in around 1866 and married in 1869. He was a sugar baker and died in 1893.

Any information will be welcome.

Hi Terence,

Research 1871 ,1881 and 1891 census - I match on each for him born in Berlin.

On the 1871 and 1891 he just says Germany!
Only on the 1881 I posted does he say Berlin.

I would say that there's a very good chance that that is a relative Chris. Is it possible that it is his father? Name fits. Birth place fits. Occupation is the same as his, so???

Thank you for all the information. I'm afraid the 1881 Census info for Martin is totally unreliable as it records his wife as also being born in Berlin and yet I have her birth certificate showing that she was born on 28 July 1852 in Red Lion Place, Wapping!

I have the 1869 marriage certificate showing his age as 21 and his father's name as John Mehrtens (farmer).

The 1846 arrival of Gevert Mehrtens certainly looks like a relative.
