I'm trying to find information about Jacob Jones, but have very little info to start with - he died before 1925, had a son called Harry and that's about it. Any ideas where to start looking - any hints and tips would be great

Not trying to sound too funny ,but with the amount of info that you dont have then I would suggest a haystack with a surname of Jones!

Do you know where he died?
When and where was Harry born?

Clare

Clare Report 9 Nov 2009 20:45

Harry was born in 1901, I think in the Stourbridge area. I have details about Harry's marriage. I'm in the process of getting Harry's military records, not sure whether this will shed any further light on Jacob?
And yes, I know what you mean about Jones and the haystack

Sourbridge Warwickshire?

Clare

Clare Report 9 Nov 2009 20:49

Yes, around that area. I think!

More questions as I am searchng 1911 for them...
What was Jacobs occupation on cert.
And are witnesses any of the family?

Clare

Clare Report 9 Nov 2009 20:55

On the marriage cert, he's listed as "General Labourer". Witnesses are listed as G Billingsley and R Watts - I don't know if these are related.
Not got much to go on really, have I!

Getting better.
Still searching.
Do you know Harrys exact date of birth?
Would he be born before 31/3/1901?

Clare

Clare Report 9 Nov 2009 21:00

On 5th Sept 1925, Harry was 24 years old. The address is listed as Coombs Wood, Halesowen. He married Adeline Bingham - she was 19 when they married

Got the Adeline stuff, just Harry and Jacob I've been struggling with

To look at those census records, do I go to 1911census - I found stuff on here before?

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 9 Nov 2009 21:31

Yes

www.1911census.co.uk

Or you can take out a sub with Find my Past...

I think your best bet is to apply for those birth that Rose put up using father Jacob as checking ref.

Was he in WW1?

If so have you looked at his records?

I am having no luck with finding a Harry with father Jacob on 1911,although there is one in the reg district of Stourbridge in an institution?

Institution JONES, Harry 1902 9 M Stourbridge Worcestershire

Born Wednesbury Staffs.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 9 Nov 2009 21:39

One of these would be the one in the istituion on 1911 I think as west brom district covers Wednesbury.

Births Jun 1901 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jones Harry W. Bromwich 6b 941
Jones Harry W. Bromwich 6b 916

The district W. Bromwich. is an alternative name for West Bromwich and it spans the boundaries of the counties of Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire

I think they may both be the same person as a correction has been added on ,,,freebmd,,,to the entry.

Clare

Clare Report 9 Nov 2009 21:41

would those births be through national archives?
Also, does the "9 m" bit mean, 9 years old and male?
How do I find out more about the "institution" bit?
I have service number for Harry, this is still classified, but my cousin is applying for his records.
Sorry about all the questions - everything else I've done so far has been fairly straight-forward!

The institution seems to be a school, wether that is boarding school or naughty boys school I dont know.....

Address:
Hagley Road Oldswinford Stourbridge

Ahhh ,its a hospital, sanitorium and orphanage.

Charitable orginasation for the Maintenance ,clothing education and apprenticing of male children.

Clare

Clare Report 9 Nov 2009 21:53

How did you get the link between Harry, Jacob and "institution" - I looked at this stuff seems like a 100 times, but not come up with that one!

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 9 Nov 2009 21:55

I have not found Harry with Jacob,I have just found a Harry in the right place, but orphaned, thats all.

He may well not be yours.
