Hi Bob

There are two possibly marriages at Kirkheaton for this man which could be
William Jessop m. Ann Jessop 15 Sep 1806..... if this wife died then......
William Jessop m. Esther Lawton 16 Apl 1816 which is the one which brummiejan has shown you.....(.Easter being pronounced Esther in this area at the time)

I am not saying his child Sarah was not born c. 1850 as he would be 60++ but could the Sarah on the 1841 possibly be his daughter or have you got a birth cert for Sarah ?-Jle

Hi Bob-thanks for the reply
If your Gt Gt grandfather is Charles Jessop married to Sarah then I can only find one for that date. He is a fancy weaver living at Cowms in Lepton. On the 1841 there are 3 William Jessops. The one married to Easter which brummiejan kindly posted is a gardener so I would rule that one out. There is one married to Herenhappuch who is too young for Charles Jessops father although he is a fancy weaver. The third William is married to a Charlotte and I think this will be Charles's father along with his step mother. I still think Charles's mother Ann Jessop will have died between 1811 and 1822 as William Jessop marries Charlotte Kaye at Kirkheaton on the 8th Sep 1822. They also live at Cowmes Bottom in Lepton. I would say that the family don't live in Kirkburton, but Kirkheaton/Lepton. The William Jessop is entered as 60 on the 1841 census which means he could be born 1777-1781.-Jle

Hi Bob
I am getting a little confused by your message. You say that you haven't got Charles on the census but yet you know he is your gt gt grandfather and lives in the Huddersfield area. Have you looked at the 1851 census with Charles Jessop who lives at Lepton or have you got that information from elsewhere. You gave his birth year as 1811 on your previous message but then say that you haven't got a date for his birth year. Have you considered the information which I gave about Charles Jessop 1811.
On reflection I think Charles's father William will be the 8th June 1778 which I have given previously. .
The reason why I don't think your relatives of this family live in Kirkburton is because I have all the transcription for baptisms, marriages and deaths in that area and their name isn't there. -Jle

Bob- as you have found the father of charles (born 1811) where have you managed to find the information that his father was born in 1785, and has the information been verified or presumed?

The potential siblings of Charles Jessop, which I have printed, have William and Ann as the parents but they have named their first son Jno (John) which could fit in with the William Jessop born 1778 son of John and Ann.- Jle

Janet Report 6 Dec 2010 10:28

Hi Bob- it might be, as there seems to be duplicate names around this area that if they were quakers the information would not have been registered in the Parish Church. If I get time I might try to call at the HuddFHS and see if there is any more information there. I recently called at the library and was told that all the information on the Quakers is now kept at the National Archives in Kew.-Jle

Janet Report 7 Dec 2010 13:12

Hi Bob
Information confirmed.
William Jessop married Ann Jessop on 15th Sept 1806 at Kirkheaton Parish
The witnesses were Mark of X Abraham Waring and Robert Dollive
The only Ann Jessop which fits in the time frame is
Ann Jessop born dau of Richard Jessop bapt. 26th Dec 1787 .
There are two Richard Jessop in the time frame but through elimination I would say the parents of this Ann were Richard Jessop Clothier and Rebecca Beaumont of Lepton.
More importantly the death of this Ann Jessop Jessop is 1st May 1822 aged 34. This is six months before a William Jessop married a Charlotte Kaye at the same church. No- it isn't solid proof that her husband went onto marry Charlotte, but it is still a possibility. When you say that your William Jessop was born 1785 is this a presumption because he may have got married aged 21. Whilst the jury might still be out on William I think that this is the right Ann Jessop, mother of Charles born 1811.
Finding more about the Jessop family, unless you know for definite that they were Quakers, you could buy transcriptions from the Huddersfield FHS. Each booklet costs about £2-50. It depends on how deeply you want to go but there seemed to be a few Jessops in Kirkheaton in these books which I looked at yesterday.
Good luck with your search.
Jle
