Find Ancestors

Well it seems to me that the 'Fricker' name is rather a difficult one to trace. My husband is the only male for the last three generations that i do know of. I would dearly love to know of his ancestors and their history, if anyone has any information regarding the name 'Fricker' and its origins i would greatly appreciate any help involved. My mother in law was a Fricker, big family from Somerset. Mum was born in Wales, the Fricker men were coal miners.

dont know any frickers myself, but know of one famous one, breda fricker. She starred in a irish film with Daniel day lewis called MY LEFT FOOT.It is about a fellow called Cristy brown who only had use of his left foot, by which he did everything with.

hi Linley i went to school with a Sally Fricker in Fareham Hants.

There is a Fricker family in Milnrow Rochdale.
I remember Mrs Fricker saying that her maiden name was also FrickerThey used to have a shop here about 15 years ago.

My friend is Nancy Fricker,and her husband was called Kenneth,who would have been in his 80's now.
Not sure where he was from,but she was from Derbs.
Can ask her when I speak.

I have the Hampshire Buriel Index(to 1837) and there are 52 buriels for FRICKER-mostly Portsea but elsewhere in Hampshire.
If I use the "soundex" search it brings up 280 which includes FRECKER and FREAKER.
There are FRICKERs in Berkshire in the 1851 census too,

The faith healer was Edward George ('Ted') Fricker. I was asked a few times if I was related to him (I'm not) when I worked in the Harringay (North London) area because the surname was relatively uncommon there.

There are lots of FRICKERS in Wiltshire and Somerset. My FRICKERS were agricultural labourers in Wiltshire and then coal miners in Somerset. Several Genes Reunited members have trees for these FRICKERS.

In the case of FRICKERS in America at least, I suspect the name comes from the town of Frick in Switzerland which isn't far from the Rhine. There seem to be lots of FRICKERS in that part of Switzerland. It is conceivable that the ancestors of UK FRICKERS travelled up the Rhine and across the North Sea (in the late Middle Ages?) but what would have been the incentive? I've seen a few suggestions for the origin of the name but all seem speculative.
