Trying to trace this line of Austins, Edward Austin b 1853 Wortley Yorkshire died 1914 Timaru New Zealand, arrived Littleton 26/7/1879 on the ORARI, sailed from Plymouth 25/4/1879, wife may have been Laura.
Edwards uncles and aunt John Austin b 1835 Yorkshire died 1910 Christchurch NZ, Thomas Austin b 1838 Yorkshire died 1901 Petane Hastings NZ, William Austin b 1839 Yorkshire died 1916 Melbourne Australia, Maria Austin b 1827 died 1912 Kaiapoi NZ.
Edwards parents or some siblings may have also migrated to NZ as I can find no trace of any of their deaths in England. Parents were James Austin and Margaret Stokoe m September 1849 at Chester Le St and siblings were Sarah 1855 Durham, Jane 1858 Northumberland, James 1859 and William 1862 both died as teenagers in mining accidents, Mary 1866 Durham, John 1868 Durham and Ambrosine 1870 Durham. Edwards sister Jane may have been a widow, surname Chaytor with a young son, William, or may have remarried so surname unknown.
I live a long way from the nearest research center so visits can be few and far between.

Hi Catherine and Lorraine,
Jane and Ralphs son William Austin Chaytor was my grandfather. I have had no luck with tracking down Ralph so thought I would go the other way and follow Janes family.
I am looking for what happened to Ralph, Jane and their son William between Williams birth in England in 1877 and his marriage in Australia in 1905. Supposedly Ralph died youngish and Jane remarried, but where and to who is a mystery, family stories say a school teacher or headmaster maybe in NZ with a name that may have been something like Dalziel and my grandfather ran away to sea as he didn`t get on with his stepfather.
I have a Ralph Chatters age 22 sailing to America as steerage passenger on the CITY OF CHESTER, departed Liverpool and Queenstown 15/4/1877 ETA America 30/4/1877, this was the day after William was born and it fits as he was born at the Bradley brick works and his birth was registered by his mother only, she was living with her parents. Ralph had two older brothers William and John Chaytor living in Steubenville Ohio at the time. John may have been manager of a local coal mine. We don`t know if Jane joined him there or if Ralph died shortly after arrival in America and Jane went to NZ with her family.
Big mystery so I am trying to work away at the Austin line.

Or maybe Jane just didn't want to go to America.

Yep, sure does, the died young bit may have been to save face!!!
I know my grandfather was in NZ before he came to Australia, he married in Sydney using the spelling of his name as Chater. If I can get a grip on the Austins and when and who went to NZ I may be able to find Jane with them.

There looks to be some mistake with the birth place for Elizabeth Chambers. I think it should be place of death as I can't see her being born in New Zealand and marrying in County Durham.
