David Report 3 Dec 2010 17:41

This family of Percival (George) Acres disappears from Leicester after 1881. Can anyone tell me what happened to them. I have tried everything including emmigration but to no avail. They are:-
Percival (George) Acres aged 40 (dubious, possibly 50) B.London
Harriet Acres aged 31 (No marriage but poss' nee Buckland. B.London
Louisa Acres Aged 11 (poss' from marriage Carter/Buckland) B.London
George P Acres aged 5 (Birth cert' shows Percival George) B.Birmingam
Ernest Edgar Acres aged 5 (Have Birth cert') B.Birmingham
Ada Madeline aged 2 (Have Birth cert') B.Leicester
Claude P Acres aged 9mos B.Leicester

Percival George Acres (Senior) was a boot maker and is, I believe, one and the same as him with his previous family living in London in 1871.
I cannot find his death or his birth but I know his father was Edward Acres (artist).
P G Acres (Senior)was shown as aged 30 in 1861, 40 in 1871, both in London but aged 40 in Leicester.

The key things I would like to know is:-
When did P G Acres (Senior) die.
What happened to his family in Leicester.

I am reasonably happy about his London family.

I would be very grateful for any help.
Thankyou.

What is the Carter/Buckland marriage you refer to?

Are the ages you are saying is what they were in the 1881 census?

David

David Report 3 Dec 2010 17:55

Hello Marie
Yes, this is the son of his first marriage to Annie Grace Doust and I have this and also his other London children.
Many thanks for you response.

Hello again Marie
In trying to find the marriage of P G Acres (Senior) to Harriet without success, I looked for the birth of their eldest child Louisa who was born in London and found a parish record of her birth to Buckland/Carter.
The ages of the children are from the 1881 census in Leciester

David - what is the mother's full name on the birth certificates you have for George, Ernest and Ada.

I'm still not getting the Carter/Buckland connection - was that a previous marriage of Harriet - if so, which one was she?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 3 Dec 2010 18:48

Is it possible that Percival and Harriet were not legally free to marry?

But, I found this 1881 - seems it could be the family he left behind:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Widow was the term adopted by women who had been dumped by their philandering husbands. I've tracked this women through to the 1911 census and am sure it's the same one who's death is in 1912 (above). I strongly suspect it is Annie Grace, first wife of Percival.
If Percival & Harriet never married and subsequently parted (or Perc died) and then Harriet remarried, the children could be masquerading under her new name in later census.
Which is why, yet again!, I'm asking David to answer my questions.
MarieCeleste
Answered my own question!
Harriet Buckland married Robert Carter:
Marriages Sep 1868
Buckland Harriet Marylebone 1a 936
CARTER Robert Edward Marylebone 1a 936
And in 1871, here they are with Louisa (who never really was an Acres)
CARTER, Harriet Wife F 21 1850 Middlesex
CARTER, Louisa Daughter F 0 1871 Middlesex
Hello Marie
You are correct with both the 1871 Census in London and also the 1881 census in Leicester.
The mother's name on the birth certificate for George, Ernest and Ada is Harriet Buckland.
Regarding the Carter/Buckland connection:-
I have no reason not to believe that the Leicester P G Acres is the same as the London P G Acres (both involved in boot making). The only Louisa I can find being born in 1970 is in London Parish births to a Robert Carter and Harriet (Christened 18 Sep 1870 - Born 08 July 1870). This family appear on the 1871 census in Marylebon asfollows:-
Robert Carter aged 22 Cab Drive.r Born Paddington
Harriet Carter aged 21 Tailoress. Born Marylebone
Louisa Carter aged8 months. Born Marylebone
I cannot find the family on the 1881 census. So I believe that P G Acres was possibly having an affair with Harriet.
I cannot find the birth certificate for Louisa Carter. I did however find a birth of a Louisa Buckland but she died in 1871.
Thanks for you continued assistance.
David
Hello Marie
Our messages are overlapping.
Thanks for the marriage info' for Buckland /Carter. I am not sure whether I found this previously.
I have tried to trace the Leicester children under the names of Acres, Carter, and Buckland but without success.
Marie
I forgot to confirm that the Death index you found for Ann Grace Acres is that of P G Acres first wife.
One other thing is that on the marriage certificates of two of his daughters from London it states that their father is dead. These marriages are in 1878 and 1880.
After much searching for P G Acres death without successthis is when I came across his new family in leicester.
It is possible that the children too their fathers leaving very badly. I can understand why.
MarieCeleste Report 4 Dec 2010 12:23
David, I think the key to finding them is to find Harriet. Perhaps look for marriage records for Harriet Carter?
Will chip away and let you know if I find anything.
I wouldn't take it as gospel that he was actually dead at the time of his daughters' marriage. In those days they would sometimes rather say that than acknowledge his existence. Same way that Annie Grace referred to herself as a widow through the subsequent censuses.
I think the Louisa Acres aged 11 in Leicester in 1881 is actually Louisa Carter, and that Harriet took her daughter with her when she set up with Percival. She would have been recorded on the census as Acres as they were passing themselves off as a married family.
Before 1874 there was not as much emphasis on registering births - quite a few of my family are unrecorded. This may be why you can't find a record for Louisa b1870.
This 1891 census is probably just a coincidence but thought it might be handy, just in case:
CARTER, Mary Head Widow F 75 1816 Needle Woman Surrey
CARTER, Harriet E Daughter Widow F 39 1852 Needle Woman London
CARTER, Ada May Granddaughter Single F 19 1872 Scholar London << Age on original is actually 9
Carter was Harriet's married name with Robert and she was a tailoress in 1871 census. Ages are a couple of years out, but that isn't unusual for those days.
MarieCeleste
MarieCeleste Report 4 Dec 2010 14:02
This could possibly be Louisa's birth registration:
Births Sep 1870
Carter Louisa Marylebone 1a 499
Works for a July birth.
David Report 4 Dec 2010 15:34
Hello Marie
Very many thanks for this additional information. The Harriet on the 1891 census looks promising, particularly as an Ada is with her and that she is a needle woman. Also thanks for finding the birth of Louisa Carter.
It does appear though that the search for the other Leicester children and P G Acres (senior) death has to go on.
I cannot say how grateful I am for your interest and help in this matter.
