Where was Jessie living when John was born?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 29 Sep 2016 17:25

On page 1 Stuart said that John was born at Balblair House.

Kay????

Kay???? Report 29 Sep 2016 22:37

See it now AG, :-).

But wondered what home address she had in 1926.?

Stuart

Stuart Report 30 Sep 2016 05:00

We don't know kay I'm hoping highland archives can tell me will post if I get this info

Kay????

Kay???? Report 30 Sep 2016 07:03

Wont it be on Johns birth certificate? my certs from SP dont go beyond 1905 and that has an address,

Stuart

Stuart Report 30 Sep 2016 07:54

on johns birth cert it only says balblair house kay maybe she was there long before he was born? highland archive people reckon there might be a record of her when she applied for entry ,I have sent my details off because its within 100yrs am hopeful as are they ,poorhouse records of this period were destroyed so we will have to see regards stuart its a parish council search they are doing

Stuart

Stuart Report 12 Oct 2016 12:58

drew a blank with the highland archive search I am afraid of the poorhouse around the parishes closest to Nairn for Jessie, their experts think my only chance is to find her on scotlandspeople born 1899-1900 under possible name janet or less likely jane/jean with mother mary, their guess hunch is that she was probably closer to Nairn than inverness when she had son john in 1926 any ideas would be great thanks

Eringobragh1916 Report 12 Oct 2016 13:27

Stuart...Re AustinQ' post 24 Sept.17.20 Re Rental of Balblair House...

This is something I found from 1919....

The elder, Henry Charles Hynman Allanby (1853-1935), received Kenwick Hall, but seems to have run out of money during the Agricultural Depression of the 1880s and sold it to his brother-in-law, Thomas Garfit. He subsequently lived in Argyllshire and in 1919 bought Balblair, a small house on the outskirts of Nairn in north-east Scotland, where his descendants still live.

Maybe this was where John was born .

Stuart Report 12 Oct 2016 18:07

Very sorry not sure what you mean

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 13 Oct 2016 11:15

I think Eringobragh means that perhaps John was born at another house called Balblair, and not at the workhouse. Possibly his mother was employed there.

Re the workhouse (not sure if this has already been posted):

"After 1930, the workhouse became a hospital and local authority nursing home known as Balblair House."

Stuart Report 13 Oct 2016 13:02

the only thing I can add is on jessies death certificate it states balblair house, balblair road, when I googled it that was the address of the old poorhouse so I don't know where to go now on this

Stuart

Stuart Report 13 Oct 2016 13:10

perhaps balblair house was used more like a hospital at this time circa 1926-7 than a poorhouse does this suggest Jessie was living in Nairn at this time maybe .The person [unconnected] above the death cert for Jessie I downloaded from scotlandspeople was elderly also died at balblair house maybe a hospital more at this time do you think

Kay????

Kay???? Report 13 Oct 2016 13:18

SP registrars are also held at the Mitchell Lbrary in Glasgow, daily fee of £15 is charged though, same as in Edinboro,,'where there its possible to half day book.

a few members often visit both places and ask *any requests* . so worth keeping an eye on the boards,if you can't get there..

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 13 Oct 2016 17:43

there are lots of articles in the paper advertising for nursing staff and similar for Balblair Home, Nairn from about 1929. However, they all state Balblair HOME, not House.

Stuart

Stuart Report 13 Oct 2016 18:56

Could it be there were balblair house and balblair home in the same balblair road that's a mouthful but could it be and who would know do you think

Stuart

Stuart Report 13 Oct 2016 20:57

I am a member of Facebook page nairn when you were a bairn a few people have confirmed balblair house where jessie died and where her son john was born was not the poorhouse so I've been barking up the wrong tree so to speak,as one of you kind experts pointed out previously the allanbys have owned this house for a while any ideas on my way forward please

Stuart

Stuart Report 14 Oct 2016 06:09

Still not convinced as the guy above on her death cert died also at bablair house and the occupier was the informant so probably was the poorhouse

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 14 Oct 2016 07:13

Stuart- you are probably right and Balblair was a nursing home/ hospital.

I know someone put the valuation rolls for 1925 up, for 2 Ness Place, but thought this might be of interest in 1930:

Valuation Rolls 1930:

2 NESS PLACE HAUGH ROAD WEST SIDE, Inverness

David MacDonald (Occ: Fitter)- Tenant
Miss Mary MacDonald- Tenant

Stuart Report 14 Oct 2016 07:50
