Find Ancestors

Please can some one help me. I am looking for my husband's grandfather, William Tunnicliffe, born 1897/8 but I do not know where. He served through the whole of WW1 as a driver in the Royal Field Artillery. His father's name was John. John was a lace maker. William married Violet Billing in Ilkeston, Derbyshire in 1922. That is all I know. How can I find William before the war to be sure he is my William. I have several to choose from. I got a copy of his death certificate because I thought it would give me his date and place of birth, but it only gives me his date, place and cause of death. Where do I go from here? I do not know who his mother was or if he had any siblings but one of the witnesses on his marriage certificate is Pheobe Tunnicliffe, maybe his sister, but I cannot find her in any of the records. Any tips on searching will be gratefully recieved.

One option is to see if his WW1 service record survived - abt 40% did. Ancestry has only got as far as A-N with indexing and putting them online.
