Diane, do try just googling -- for instance

prollius "south africa"

That found a couple of family tree websites:

http://www.myheritage.com/site-9016241/prollius

http://www.myheritage.com/site-family-tree-40388912/prollius-kindo

There seem to be loads and loads of people with the surname in SA. You will find all sorts of ways of contacting them. There's even one in Johannesburg on a dating site. ;)

One is here in Canada these days, it seems (he seems to be the most famous of the lot) --

http://www.sasksurgery.ca/individual/p/prollius-almereau.htm

I have no idea how common the name is there, and what the chances are that they'd all be connected with your family. But one may as well try!

Hi Everyone

Well thank you so very much for the information I had no Idea how to do some of the things you have mentioned. I will do that in the next couple of days. Again many thanks. As for the Merten Broll I had a lady give me that information but no other so I have no idea yet how it works out.

Thank you so much

Diane

And then of course there was the previous thread.

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/records_office/thread/1187812

But hey, why not start another one (against the clear rules) and not disclose any of that info ...

"The only name I have is Merten Broll 1589, and then somehow it became Proll and then Prollius."

Diane, this means nothing unless you can provide all the links back from yourself to this Merten Broll 1589.

and google can be useful:

You can browse some Prollius records in SA that might help somewhat -- I haven't looked carefully at them.

http://www.national.archives.gov.za/index.htm

On the left, select

Search National Automated Archival Information Retrieval System

then select (as your best bet, but try the others)

RSA - All Archives Repositories and National Registers of non-public records

and then just search for Prollius. I was given 33 results, and the results summary showed numerous divorces and the like, mainly in the mid-1900s.

Hello Paula

Many thanks Paula for your reply yes I have been able to find this out. I am nearly at my wits end, I have found a letter of correspondance to my daughter that was sent to her some years ago and it was from a Rita McDonald who I think lives in South Africa it was dated 11 years ago. She was originally a Prollius and by the looks of things her dad was one of my grandfathers brothers. Now I have really lost the plot as I cant seem to find any address etc.

Thank you so very much to Paula, Flick, Astra and Kathleen
for the information. The only name I have is Merten Broll 1589, and then somehow it became Proll and then Prollius. My maiden name is Prollius and I am desperately trying to find what I can out of my past. My parents died when I was quite young and therefore never said anything. All I have is on my tree on Genes but I am trying to find out more. My relatives were George Carl Wilhelm Theodore Prollius and he was born in 1811 in Germany, then I jump to my gread grandfather who was Balduin Friedrich Theodore Prollius, I appreciate all those who help people like me in desperate need of information. It can be quite frightening knowing our past. I believe my grandfather Armand Theodore Prollius and his brother Armadee jumped ship (stowed away) from Mauritius and Armadee made his way to South Africa my grandfather Armand arrived in Australia. I have no idea when, or where this occured. He then became a lighthouse keeper in Victoria, again there seems to be no information.

If you google the name plus origin the first result that comes up is from Ancestry and they suggest the origin is Germany.

The first evidence I can find of your name in the census is in 1891. Conrad Prollius and his family. He is a baker and from Germany. Living in Whitechapel

I am desperately trying to find out if any one can help me I have reason to believe that my surname PROLLIUS came from PROLL which came from BROLL and it originated in Germany. I desperately need help in finding out if this is correct.
