You don't need a service number if you have the exact D.O.B.

Army records after 1920 are not online.

Subject to certain criteria (see link below), which may or may not apply to you and what info you have, records can be applied for, at a cost of £30 (non-refundable). They would be sent by post, and can take several months to be processed under normal circumstances, and possibly longer at present.

Forces-war-records site shows a few men named L Sale in WW2, but you need a sub to see details, and I'm not sure how much that would tell you. You might be able to figure out which was the right one, and maybe find out a service number to help you if sending for a copy of his record as above:

You might find some mention of him in a local newspaper of the time.

Hello

Please could someone tell me if its possible to find anything out about a persons army Records from just his date of birth? We do not have any other information Other than he was in the army during WW2

His details are Birth: Leonard SALE 15/03/1920 Hemsworth. Died 1972 Huddersfield. I know he was married and had 5 children (we have that information).

Any advice very much appreciated. Thankyou
