please can someone help me - I wish to research my GG Grandfather James Madden who was in the horse artillery in WW1 - I have attached a photo to him in my family tree but I don't think I can do that here in this message?
Please can someone help me and explain how I can research his war records? He was living in Paddington London at Senior Street and was married to Ada Smith.
His two sons were are enlisted (James and Henry Madden).

Over 60% of full WW1 service records were destroyed as a result of WW2 bombing. Medal card remain although its difficult to decide which would be relevant to your GG grandfather.
When was he born, and where? Surviving service records can be filtered with that.
Did he survive the war?
Places to look are this site or FMP - they are the same database - Ancestry, or the National Archives. The NA usually redirects you to Ancestry (££)

he was born in 1869 in Paddington London and yes he did survive but I know nothing more other than he served in the horses artillery.
is that enough to potentially search for do you think?
His wife was Ada Madden / ne smith

Note in Action Taken section - List RA/3585.
No mention of any medals. There ought to be another medal list somewhere. Even if he didn't serve in a Theatre of War, you'd have thought he would have received the British & Victory medals.
The cause for discharge *might* be "Surplus to military requirements (having suffered impairment since entry into the service)". In any event, soldiers were being demobbed in 1919 and he was 50 years old!
