I loved The Kashmir Shawl Vers. I saw the film of Philomena and enjoyed it.

I finished Martin Sixsmith's "Philomena" a little while ago. I haven't seen the film but I was a little bit disappointed with the book. I had hoped for a bit more about Philomena's life and search for her son but a lot of the book was about the son's life in America. I don't think it was necessary to detail his sexual activities quite so fully and I felt it read more like a novel than a true story. But having said that, it was very moving.

I next read Lee Child's "Worth Dying For" - a Jack Reacher novel. OK but I didn't sympathise with a single character and felt the violence would have been more shocking if there had been less of it. It got a bit boring in the end.

Last night I finished "Skios" by Michael Frayn. It's a comedy set on a Greek Island. At the airport, Oliver Fox picks up the wrong suitcase, sees a driver holding a board up for Dr. Norman Wilson, and pretends to be him. Lots of mistaken identity, misunderstandings etc. It was fairly amusing but, as a book, I didn't find it made me laugh out loud. But all the way through I kept thinking "this would make a really good farce on stage". I wonder if Michael Frayn will ever adapt it for the stage.

I've got "The Kashmir Shawl" from the library to read next. It was on the "book group" shelf and I remembered seeing it mentioned on here so thought I'd give it a go. I've also got "Nicholas and Alexandra" on the kindle and I think I will download "Symphony of Echoes" as I read and enjoyed the earlier book in that series, "Just One Damned Thing...". That should keep me going for a little while.

I have not been keen on Joanne Harris's books so far. I know I am in a minority. But that one sounds different BC. Are you sure the main character is not modelled on you?? :-D :-D

I have just noticed that I have Blackberry wine sitting on my book shelf waiting to be read..... that has been there a while!!!

I am almost at the end of Joanne Harris's (she wrote 'Chocolat') 'Holy Fools'. Set in France in 17th century, a time of religious reform, the plague, and general unrest. The central character is a Gypsy. six foot, red haired, ex rope dancer who has 'been around' and ;led a full and lusty life. She is under the spell of LeMerle, a strange, charismatic and often ruthless character.

Through circumstances beyond her control (I wont spoil the plot!), she is now a nun and working in the gardens of The Abbey. It is a free and easy Order and the nuns pretty much do what they want. Until one day......

If this sounds too slushy, it isn't. The writing is wonderful and you can almost smell the atmosphere. Juliette is a strong, loving woman, and her character is so well done you really get to know her and like her.

I am about halfway through Citadel by Kate Moss. Not a quick read as usual with her books, set in 1942 France with some interesting links to the Cathars in 842. Vague links I think with Labrynth if you read that but not necessary to have read it to enjoy this one.

Im half way through The Mill River Recluse by Darcie Chan, which is one of the books voted for on Ann's Greaders. I do not want to spoil it but I have to say I am really
enjoying it :-D

I have been lucky so far and not found any that have really been rubbish, some have maybe been a bit light but readable on holiday, some have been good. reading The Citadel at the moment by Kate Moss.

If a book is 'rubbish', I just delete it from my Kindle. Bearing in mind that I'd read the back of a cereal packet if nothing else is available, that's saying something! :-D

Currently I have 3 folders - Read, Werewolves, Witches n Vampires (which have also been read) and Paid for. There's only a couple in there at the moment - I scour the free list on a weekly basis. Many of the books offered for nothing are the first of a series, the hope being that you will want to purchase subsequent ones.

The most recent one finished (downloaded when free!) was "The Enemy We Know (Suspense with a Dash of Humor) " by Donna White Glaser

Recovering Alcoholic, Psychotherapist Letty Whittaker has been attacked by a client........... and is being stalked. The story focusses on her battle to stay on the wagon, and to discover who her stalker is. With 2 murders and several suspects, the 'who dunit' was quite a revelation.

you can also open folders on the kindle to keep your books in
i have 3 one for books that i have read and one for books that are new and one for the books that i have downlowed and not my salt of book so i call that folder
crap lol

im a fan of dilly court love her books even payed £11 for one
and it when down half the price a few months later
now i put book in my wish list and keep an eye on them to go down in price

I so love my kindle i take it every were with me

Just finished a couple of books:

One Summer: America 1927 by Bill Bryson. This is an interesting factual book about American events in 1927. There's a lot about the growth of aviation and how brave (and very foolhardy) the early aviators were, about gangsters, politics and sport, particularly baseball. I found it interesting reading about characters like Calvin Coolidge, president at the time, who comes over as an idiot, and Babe Ruth whom I had heard of but knew nothing about.

The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes. This won the Man Booker prize in 2011. Not sure what to make of it. It's narrated by the elderly Tony and relates to events in his youth. Although it is quite short and easy to read, it is quite philosophical and seems to be about history and memory and how we view our past. I couldn't really warm to any of the characters. One girl keeps saying to Tony "You just don't get it do you?" I don't think I got it either!

Am part way through Philomena which I am enjoying even though it is heart-rending.

Finished reading Peterhead Porridge and really enjoyed it :-)

Just finished Expo 58 by Jonathan Coe sent by the Genes Bookclub.
If you can get it for less than the hardback cover price of £16.99, its well worth a read.
