you could order a copy of a newspaper from the day baby was born? might be an interesting gift. and you could put it in the family tree book.

What about one of those books where the child's name is put in as the character? I remember getting one when I was about 7 and thinking it was amazing, still got it now - Wizwam and Dawn under the Sea!!

I was going to suggest naming a star, hubby did this for our kids. Have also done the photo plan thing for our godchildren which went down well.
I'm not into the 'keepsake' thing myself - have got a box full of Peter rabbit pots, silver money boxes etc that my kids were bought. Only thing they have ever used was a silver tooth fairy box. Something like that might be an idea of a little gift if you decide to give money.
Last minute do lots of unusual gifts, have you had a look on there?

How about adopting a dolphin from the WDCS, £4.00 a month. They send monthly news letters to the child and photos of his/her dolphin. We started this on our Brendan's 2nd birthday and he really looks forward to news of his "Whiskey". You could take grandson to the Moray Firth to see the dolphins when he's older too.

Or you could start laying down champagne ready for his wedding.

When my Niece was Christened I named a star after her. There are a couple of websites with great ideas.

One of ours had beautiful leather bound one with lovely full plate illustations and all the text in clear easy to understand vocabulary... plus space at the front to record their own family.
