Hi everyone, I just want you to know it was NOT me who's been deleting left,right and centre.
I have just been so busy with multiple things, can't think straight.
Ann in Glos - I could use some shelves if he's itching to make some - I want them for my African violets. LOL.
My bookshelf is full - when we moved here I sorted out books, I love books, love having a library full, so I sorted and Freecycled boxes and boxes of books of all types, kept the ones I thought I would read or use, and the floor to ceiling shelf (8'3" wide) is still full LOL.
When we cleared out my ex-fil's flat it was an eye-opening experience. Cupboard doors cover a multitude of secrets. he literally had 14 brand-new frying pans, all with tags attached, they'd been on sale at various times and he HAD to take advantage of the seniors discount - which also resulted in 18 packages of poultry seasoning. 75 neckties, though I never saw him wear one. I do not want my kids to have to go through my "stuff" and toss things which should be important to them. My daughter Colleen is a hoarder,she cannot throw away anything which her grandmother gave her, regardless as to whether it is tattered and torn and has no further use. I keep telling her that her grandmother is not in the item, she wouldn't want you to hang onto things just because she gave them to you. You still have the memory. Well unfortunately that's not true because she has significant memory loss of her childhood because her seizures were out-of-control for so long, was having 30 plus a day (proven on EEG), so she only has short-term memory, and limited long-term.
I took a big box of jigsaw puzzles to the Home for the Aged where I work. The residents love them, every night 3 or 4 of them sit up late working an a puzzle together. Nice to see. And I no longer have to store them.

I still have big problems with unopened envelopes,, terrible fear overtakes me when faced with them, they pile up till my daughter gets u mad!!

I had a storage unit but cleared it and got rid of it, I figured if I hadn't used the items in 3 years I didn't miss them and didn't need them. I try and maintain my intellectual side rather than the emotional side when it comes to disposing of things. Doesn't always work, but I try. For example - why do I need the wooden butter-pat paddles we used when we lived in Cardiff (left there in december 1950)? They are a novelty now, used them once that I can remember, but still they are moved from place to place and take up drawer space. Perhaps I should donate them to the local museum.
Someone ruthless may need to come in here and toss for me. I do have 3 bins on the go - labelled "Put away", Give away", and "throw away". That';s helped a lot, I see some thing to dispose of and it has a home to go, then when full, either Freecycle or take to the thrift shop to benefit diabetes.
back to my day, it's a holiday here - "Family Day", so I'd better spend some family time.

Well ladies I have taken the bull by the horns, or rather the kitten by the tail and rung Help the Aged, they are coming up Wednesday morning to take some books and the rest of the stuff I have waiting. I decided to get rid of some cookery books but not my old edition of Mrs Beetons, are you listening Sharron? or my Tudors food and feast book, nor Tudors housewife, why I find how the Tudor housewife worked and what she did so fascinating I don't know but they were much more advanced than we give them credit for. I think every good bookcase should have a copy of Spike Milligans poetry as well as some of his other books, he was a genius.
Might get some more courage and sort some others out now.

Oh Eileen... something like that happened to my other son when he went for an apprenticeship as at a cookery school/restaurant.
Worse than that it was my sister who did it.
She set up the interview for him, she took him to the place, she let him have the interview.. and then told the Chef in charge that it would not be a good idea to hire him as the two of them did not get on very well....
I did have a little bit of pleasure a few weeks later when her son was sacked for causing trouble...

I took my grandson for that interview at 14.30, but it was in vain. He is far too open, had told another pupil at the college where he studies about this prestigious restaurant, so the other lad made an apppointment for 12.00, Douglas made one for 14.30.The other was taken on, my grandson wasn't. Maybe he will be a bit harder in future.

Miserable weather again, grey and cold.

Hi all, just a quick visit but oh dear my wee problem nearly returned with that laugh Gail, thank you for sharing your new way of laundering, I could have done that recently had o.h. finished the shower installation he started in November 07!!!!! That washing machine better turn up tomorrow, we paid extra to have an allocated slot as I want o.h. to check it in and install it and he goes to work at 1ish! Therefore the van will deliver between 7am and 10am lol, needless to say it will wake me but I will stay in bed out of the way as long as I can. Will start on the washing when I get up and should be caught up by the end of the week!

I have so many books, boxed up at my son's and in one of my garages I rent, and at home and here, no bookcases in this house, o.h. isn't a reader nor were his sons or wife, obviously, thick lot lol, so he doesn't understand the pleasure I get from them, read a lot of fiction mainly historical type rather than Mills and Boon or chick lit altho the odd chick lit is ok. I do have several to get rid of so will pass those on somewhere. I get at least two each week from the charity bookshelf in our local supermarket, you can leave books when you are finished with them and people take them and put 25p a book in the collection box.

Better get myself sorted out, didn't get up till 3 as I stayed on here so long last night/early this morning, catching up with some of the threads and other stuff I look at.

Tony refuses to build me any more shelves now because he says i will only fill them with books. Well, what else are they for I ask?? And I have taken quite a lot to charity shops in the past few months too.

So we are all book lovers then?
I have so many books and have great trouble getting rid of them.
I had Allan build me floor to ceiling book shelving in a very wide alcove we have. it is full and I regularly have to sort out and very reluctantly give some away. The *some * I gave away last time filled so many boxes. Allan and Tony took a few boxes down to the medical centre... they sell them there.
My SIL took two boxes, we put about four boxes up in the community centre... and god alone knows where the others went. I just can't remember.
Did that leave me any more room ??? Not at all, I just filled in the spaces with more books!
I have been like that since I was a tiny little girl. Al that has changed is that I am no longer tiny.... in any way. ;-0)

Busy at the moment thinking of the books I may ask for for my birthday.
I am one hopeless case!

I did take my shoes off, well flip flops as OH calls them. So I guess that is a plus. Did forget to tuck my hair in though so most of it got wet as well, and it is a cow to dry. I did remember to take my glasses off this time as well, so 2 pluses.

I have a copy of Cheshire and Fifoot,which,of course,I consult every day,Adam Smith,Tom Paine,Edward Burke,William Shirer,Mrs Beeton,Spike Milligan,welding textbooks,several Haynes manuals.It's not normal is it?

Think of the space if I got rid of them.Unfortunately they contain the knowledge that should be in the far greater space in my head.

I got in the bath with my slippers on once Gail and regularly have to ask why I am looking in the fridge.

Just come back and noticed all the deletes???. Gail you have given me my first laugh in weeks, I love it, I thought I did daft things.

Sharron my passion is cookery and bird books, I gave a lot to my grandson, cookery books, but still have a lot to get rid of. My problem now is family history and the history of places I and my ancestors lived, they will have to go with me. I have a book on Cononley in Yorkshire and there are quite a few photos of my mums family in mid 1800s, it's a lovely surprise when things like that happen.

Better go and get my afternoon rest now.

Well this is a first and should brighten everyone's day.

I have gotten in the shower before with my glasses on and one time wearing a hat.

This time, I donned my shower cap, turned the water on, lovely and warm. Picked up the soap to wash myself and found, I HAD ALL MY CLOTHES STILL ON.

Think I am loosing the plot. They will at least be clean.

So Sharron is a collector as is Y/caz. More little treasures!!!

I also have loads of books. Have them stored under the bed and a very large cupboard chokkers full in our garage. Did give some to the charity shop 5 year ago though, was a full collection of Agutha Christie and all hard cover. Plus 200 more of various topics. I still have all my accounting and law books. Do not use them anymore so why keep them?

Y/Caz, I was never in any immediate danger as nearest fire was about 20 klms away, was worried though as the whole area was so very dry, it was almost like autumn as trees were loosing their leaves and dying off at an alarming rate. I have grown up with this danger and luckily know what to do, save my pets, photos, paperwork and just get out.

Oh God yes,books.I have far,far,far too many.I don't have many fiction books but far too many cookery books and reference books.It is something about the knowledge within,if I throw away or lose the book I also lose the knowledge.

I would not like my bookshelf on Through the Keyhole.There are too many on the Krays and Hitler,Fred West.There is even one with a picture of the Queen Mother on it! I keep meaning to get a few Mills and Boone to even things up a bit.

When I win the lottery I will buy the Encyclopaedia Brittannica and Complete Oxford Dictionary and have a week-end away in Bognor.

Hello all, I have only just now, by reading Ann's answer, realised why I find it so hard to get rid of my books. I am still trying to clear out but can't for the life in me get rid of books. When I was with my first husband, he was very mean with money and I had to take some of my beloved books to the second hand book shop to get money for food for my three children. It's not a replacement for love with me but a forced loss of my personal possessions at that time. When I got remarried he bought me books and I bought whatever I wanted as if to make up for it, I have hundreds and none of them fiction, unless historical. I have taken what I could to the hospital book shop but dither about when I try and sort the others.

I hadn't realised how long it's been since I was last here, but there again I'm not sure what day it is anymore, all the days are the same running into one another. I am on my second lot of antibiotics, doctor wasn't very pleased when she saw me last week, my gland on left of neck was still swollen. When I showed her the little bottle with the two stones in she said phew that saved an operation by coming out themselves. I never even thought about that.

Hope you are all doing ok and I'm glad Gail is safe, I am so far behind with my emails and pms but I am slowly getting round to them.
