Did the first wife actually die? If she didn't actually die then that would explain why you can't find a marriage.

when was he born?

can you just confirm that the 1845 child was born to the second wife, 4 years before 1st wife died?

in the 1841 census he was with his first wife Mary and their is no sign of him in the 1851 census ... Elizabeth and John do not appear to have had any residence until 1861 and then they had a house on wharf street in sowerby bridge .......
I reckon the first wife and him split prior to her death

bit confused with your dates/years

THEIR FIRST CHILD WAS BORN IN 1845 ........ HE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN MARRIED PREVIOUSLY AND HIS FIRST WIFE SEEMS TO HAVE DIED IN AND AROUND 1849 SHE WAS CALLED MARY ANN

1st wife died 4 years after he had a child with 2nd wife? is that right?
