Great Grandad was iin HMS Recruit when it was wrecked off Cowes, he then transferred to HMS Havock and 2 days later that colided with HMS Starfish...he survived both incidents but couldn't understand why other sailors didn't want to be in the same ship as him!

OH's g. gparents lost their youngest 1.11.1914 in battle off Chile he was 18 yrs. Their son-in-law 1.1.1915 off Portland Bill (his wife was pregnant with their first child).

Know the following were not kia at sea but a dreadful tragedy for parents as

Another son died travelling on Titanic1912 another 16yr old died in RN of meningitis after enlisting 6 mths prior as 18 yrs in 1907, eldest son died 1915, second eldest 1919 and their father died in 1916.

They had seven sons and the mother lost 5 of them in less than 12 years and buried her husband as well.

Mine in WW2 my grandad went down with his ship entering the Thames Estuary - his brother 6 weeks later in the Irish Sea. Coming from a mariners of many ancestors I usually am surprised with my lot when I find they have been buried on dry land!

Hi, Hoff

How are you, today?

During WWII, the family, including his twin sister, were told that my mother's cousin had committed suicide by jumping overboard. It was only recently that we found he did not. His ship was torpedoed with the loss of many hands.

As you can imagine, his twin took this news particularly hard.

Why do people make up such stories, which upset more than the truth?

Those stories are really sad, all of mine returned home.....Grandad in WW1, and three sons in WWII and one son-in-law all returned home safely, plus the 2 soldiers....

Uncle Sam ended up in the water twice when his ship was sunk under him - I think he was in the Russian convoys.....but he was born with a cowl and that is why they say he survived....

It is so sad to hear of the others who did not come through though, especially children.....all those tears....

Yes I have a great uncle lost at sea from the Melita 1923, he was only 22. I am looking for more information about it at the moment.
Great grandad was a ships greaser and was adrift at sea in an open boat for several days after their ship caught fire. He suffered frostbite but survived. I am looking for the ship and year as I have no idea?
