Where can anyone possibly go wrong with *Ann*?

Adding an e on the end is common, and I'd prefer it if it wasn't, but know that people have to stop and think about it, so only get cross with my sister, lol.

People often lengthen my name to Annabelle or Annabella... Annabellisima even, in one case, lol!!

Then you've got Daffodil, Daff, Daft, Dafty and Daffy, pmsl... I am not keen on Daffy Duck.. but all the others I love!!

Winter Drawers Ever Near Report 27 Nov 2007 23:20

I give up with my name. Not only do people find it difficult to spell, they can't even pronounce it.

I've had it spelt Eileen, Elaine, Ellan, Haylene, Hayleen, Ayleen, Alien (!) Ealing (what as in Broadway).

I also get it pronounced as above with the occasional Ails and A thrown in for good measure.

I give up.

Mhairi Queen of Scots

Mhairi Queen of Scots Report 27 Nov 2007 23:28

Yes...

I've gotten used to it...when reading out lists people always stop at my name, look at it, look up, look at it again before saying out my last name.

I answer to Mary, Marie, Maria, Mariah and the gaelic equivilant of my name. I wont even get into spellings, we would be here for ever.

I correct people sometimes but if they continue i just leave them to it, someone else usually tells them :)

When we had supply teachers in, in primary school, they would pause at my name and the whole class would say as one "Its Mhairi" :D

I also once had an arguement with a teacher. He told me my name was Mhairi (pronounced with a V) and I said no, its Mhairi (with an M). One of the silliest arguements I've ever had.

Oh,
do not get me started!
When I was little, many, many, years ago, my name was very unusual - although a Biblical name.
If people would not shorten it, then I was called 'Joanne' more often than not.
When my family and I moved onto the USAF base at Mildenhall, Suffolk, where most of my friends were American - I was ALWAYS called 'Jo-anne'!!
It STILL makes my teeth go funny.
I have even been called 'Joan' in Malta!
grrr
Either my proper full name - or JO!!

Always.

My name is Joanne with an 'e' not an 'a', and defininately not 'Johanna'.
Same goes for my surname - yes it is like the train station but without the 'd'.
I thought my married name would be easy - wrong!
I say, my name is Pearse - they say 'is that p i e r c e', I say no 'e a', they say 'c e', I say no 's e'

Evening, Joanne!

How funny!
It has never occurred to me before that a JoannE might not like being called 'JoannA'!
Just think, I was a pioneer!
I paved the way for your version of our name to become the usual one!!
I knew I was useful for something!

I expect like me, you have had it all your life.
Like you, a lot of people call me Jo, but will often write it in cards as 'Joe'. THAT IS A BOYS NAME!!!

Joanna Report 28 Nov 2007 00:05

YES, oh yes!!
Had that for ever!
Either a boy's name - or a budgie's!!
Norwegian pals used to pronounce my full name as 'Joh-hanna' which was not too bad.
I used to really enjoy hearing my very Welsh FIL say my name.
It came out as 'Jew-anna'.
No-one else calls me that now he has gone.

Jo (no 'e'!) x

(I used to be called Jo-Jo by some elderly relatives - until I got married to a Jones.
I mean, Jo-Jo Jones is just ridiculous!!)

Mhairi, I have a friend with that name and hers is pronounced with the V sound at the beginning, confused me no end when I first saw it written down lol
Mine is usually ok spelling wise altho I often get asked if there is an 'e' on the end of my surname. Same with my middle name, Ann, I don't have an 'e' there either.

Blessed? with a Welsh name and growing up in Hampshire brought untold numbers of variations on spelling and pronunciation.....still does.
I often wished I had a 'normal' name but have had plenty of years to get used to it now!
Until I was married I usually was called by my full name but O.H. calls be Gwyn, ....to the horror of my late Mum who insisted that was a boy's name.
Locally many people have changed the shortened form to Gwen.
It doesn't bother me.
