JEH123 Report 29 Nov 2007 10:01

I've had four in the last two weeks, one from Egg I'm not with. One from Nationwide not with them and two from Nat west. I phoned natwest and they said to forward them to [email protected]. They told me they would never ask for your details on line.

I've also had 3 emails from Nigeria talking about some money and if I give details I can have access to this money or something or other. I've deleted them too. These emails all seem to be coming at once. I'm glad its not just me.

I think they must think I was born yesterday.

Ahh then that could explain why I get more from the Halifax than any other bank, if they actually do send emails...its the most likely to be replied to by unsuspecting customers.

I'm with Nationwide, get a few of those too, but they state time and again they do not contact customers via email.

Waiting for Barclays, haven't had one of those in a while LOL

I bank with the Halifax, and occasionally do recieve emails from them which are genuine,

Heres some information from the Halifax website.

Some of the info may apply to various other banks as well

'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''

At Halifax, we know fraudsters are constantly trying new tricks to get customers to divulge their details. This section has been created to pass on our knoweldge of these tricks to you, so that, together, we stop the fraudsters.

What is an email scam?

One of the fraudsters' favourite methods is the email scam. They send an email to thousands or millions of email addresses - one of which could be yours - and try to con the recipient into parting with their precious personal information.

What is phishing?

Email scams are sometimes known as phishing, because they are essentially fishing for information. So make sure you're not the one that gets caught. Learn more with our phishing demo.

How can I spot a scam or phishing email?

At first glance, phishing emails look like the genuine article. They may have an official looking logo and information taken from legitimate websites. But look a little closer - and there are things you can look out for:

First and foremost, Halifax would never send you an email asking you to verify your secure online banking details. Any email asking you to 'verify your account', 'confirm your sign in details', or using a similar form of words, is certainly a scam.
Secondly, beware of links in emails. Web addresses in phishing emails can be disguised so that they appear to be taking you to a trusted address when, in fact, they take you somewhere different. This is usually a spoof site that has been set up by the fraudsters to try and get you to hand over your details.
Genuine emails from the Halifax do contain links, but never to the online banking sign-in page. If you are in any doubt about whether an email is genuine, don't click the link.

One thing to look out for with those is that, if you read them over carefully, they are usually peppered with spelling errors.

I've had ones from Barclays, Bank of America (?) and many others, including my old bank. (I was pretty sure it was a hoax but forwarded it to them anyway and - sure enough - it was.)

Worth a nudge. I've had three today! There must be a new scamming campaign going on.

Please everyone note.....

Your bank will NEVER contact you by email, it will always be a letter.

So if any well known bank seems to be sending an email to you DELETE IT! It's just a scam.

Its a shame but people do fall for these scammers,,,,,,,,,even when they dont bank with them,!!!

It has been widly published that NO bank sends out mail especially to update accounts,,

If you dont bank with any you recive-dump them and dont even open unless you have good security,,to stop tracking when you use a card on shopping or auction sites,,,,

The 3rd one since Sunday has arrived today, ive already had one from the Halifax, and one from Lloyds TSB.
I'm not even with todays bank (Nationwide)

if the email is addressed to a valued customer or similer its not a personal email to you and is likely a scam email sent randomly to your email account.

Remember never to use an email link from a bank to change or upgrade details.. Always go to your bank website and log in as normal on there. If in doubt phone your bank.

here are a few examples of the mails ive recently received, note the layout of the wording is badly done (ive copy pasted as it was shown on my email)
