Just a thought.
Is your desktop displaying correctly?
If it is merely your window that is wrong then right click on its title in the menu bar at the bottom of the screen and then select Maximise.

Before anyone suggests the old favourite, please DON'T use System Restore!
It may be best first to ask husband whether he changed any settings before poking around with other settings that may make things worse!

I'm not sure what display you are running but there may also be a button on the front of the monitor (or somewhere) that lets you manually change the monitor settings including aspect ratios.
Also, I am not sure what video card or display adapter you have but there should be a setting for that too which may solve the problem.
I'm not sitting at an XP computer at the moment so sorry if I sound a little vague - if you continue to have problems I'll try to have a look later today.

Just had a play in the Control Panel then Displays yes that changed it but didn't change it to how it was before.

Are you basically saying that the window is actually larger than your desktop (screen)?

Yes, i can't even see the scrolling up & down bar.

Its like if you watch a widescreen film on your TV and you need to change from 16:9 to L.Box

From Control Panel (Classic view) you can change your display settings - it may be that the resolution has been changed so have a play around until it looks right.

Which version of Windows are you running?
Also, you may want to change your display settings under Control Panel.
