Deanna, no, we went to Disney in Florida with the kids in 1987 they were using the brown paper sacks then and I thought it was such a good idea even though there were no handles.....perhaps it was changed because you can carry more plastic bags.....

Round here we have:;

black plastic wheelie for refuse
green wheelie for veg and garden waste and cardboard
small black plastic box for newspapers mags etc.
small green " for tins and plastic bottles
small brown basket for glass bottles and jars....

we have now been told we can use the green wheelie for cooked leftovers, bones etc. whereas before you could only put in raw veg....

step with all the recycling, doesn't it?

SALLY... did you live in America then?

We used to use paper bags here in the 50/ 60/ and 70's.

I think it was about that time that the plastic bags started.

When I first got married (50's) we all had two shopping bags.
one was for veg, and the shop keeper would weigh it out and pour it straight into your veg bag...
the other was a shopping bag wnich held all the other shopping ... tea sugar butter etc...
we bought the weekly shop and then went down every day for our daily bits such as bread, meat... things like that.

The plastic bags idea, can npot be laid ot the door of the ordinary housewife...

Someone made big bucks out of them!

In Hertford we have a black wheelie for general waste, a brown one for garden waste and a green box for white paper, glass and tins. These are sorted at point of collection. To anchor down the lid of our green box we have a brick.

Our council makes soil conditioner and organic compost from the garden waste. I'd love to know how they can guarantee that the garden waste they receive is free from pesticides and fertilizers.

we currently have one wheelie for general rubbish, and a green box for paper and glass....ok on a dry day, but after a few wet days it doesn't look so good :-(

I wash out our milk cartons and squash, then take them to the local supermarket once they start to take over the kitchen...or the next shopping session...which ever comes first.

I believe we are about to get a seperate wheelie for our recyleable stuff, but haven't heard when....no idea where we will store it though as it has to be out the front of ours...we have several steps round the back that make it impossible.

I stop my plastics from blowing down the street by pegging the blue sack with clothes pegs. Then if it decides to blow away the whole darn lot goes too !

Did I read that some people put cardboard in with their garden waste ? It makes sense; as that s what you use for compost isn't it
Joan (who doesn't wash out her tins or jars unless she is doing the washing up !)

We have green bins for household waste and blue ones for paper -BUT NOT CARDBOARD.OR ENVELOPES. The plastic bottles go in the blue bin too but I'm never up when they come at such an earthly hour Nothing gets squashed in this house. As they go to our local tip - what's the point?

I recycle and it is amazing how much there is after a couple of days. I take it to the recycle center as when the council collect it in my road half of it is left blowing up the road and they miss some boxes.
I love pushing the glass in with force to make it smash. Anger management.

Blue for Recycling

Brown for garden waste shredded paper and veg peelings

Glass bottles to the bottle bank

I do not crush my plastic bottles and we are not supposed to leave the lids on them.

Pauline.

Joanna Report 28 Oct 2007 14:08

Here in south Hants we have two bins; a green one for normal household rubbish and a blue-lidded one for paper, cardboard, tins, cans, and plastic bottles.
I flatten plastic bottles as much as I can with my hands and then put the plastic cap back on, which keeps the bottle flattened.
Plastic food containers and glass have to be taken to a tip.
My biggest moan is that the twits who empty the blue bin do not seem able to manage to put the
thing back onto our driveway - which is wide enough to park a small plane on!!
If I am not here when it is emptied, they park the bin on the very narrow pavement - which causes an obstruction until I get home to move it.
We have a large, brand-new retirement complex at the end of our road, and now we have wheelchair users going past the house on a regular basis.
My bin on the pavement means that they have to go into the road. I know other bins are left on the pavements but I don't want it to be my bin that causes someone to have an accident.
I have rung the Recylcling help no. and told them this - but it has made no difference. If the men who empty the green bin can put it back onto our drive, why can't the other lot??
This time I shall tape a notice onto the blue lid and see if that has any effect!

Yes Deanna, and I have to use my veg knife to cut the plastic on my cucumber, it is so tight.....hard luck for those with arthritis then....

In America, years ago, we used to get large brown bags to put the food in at the check out and I thought it was such a good idea, and hoped it would be taken up here......recycling and all that.....but no......when we went back a couple of years later, all the supermarkets we went to were using plastic carrier bags.......talk about taking a step backwards....

SheilaSomerset

SheilaSomerset Report 28 Oct 2007 12:14

We have to take plastic bottles to the recycling centre - only glass, paper and cans are collected, so NO I don't squash them as they go in a big skip which squashes them anyway!! There is a separate bin for all the plastic bottle tops too.

Deanna

Deanna Report 28 Oct 2007 11:58

I too get angry that we are not allowed to recycle ALL the plastic.

We used to have the boxes too, and they had to hand sort them at the van...

And I also get annoyed at the extra, and stupid packaging in the super markets.

Whose idea was it to plastic wrap a CUCUMBER ??

Yes Gwyn, I wish they would do more about recycling food packaging. So much room is taken up in my bin with it. I do try and buy things like tomatoes and mushrooms loose at the supermarket, but even there they give you plastic bags to put them in (apart from mushroom bags) which kind of defeats the object. I do get odd looks from the checkout girls when I send my broccoli and parsnips through without any wrapping! lol

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 28 Oct 2007 11:44

It's surprising how the areas differ in collecting recycling, isn't it?

Glass, cans, tins, plastic bottles all go into the small black box here...hence the need to squash to make enough room.
On collection day a man collects box from the roadside and hand sorts each item into the correct compartment on the side of the lorry. It's not very busy here but nearer town this causes traffic holdups, while the sorting is done.

I wish we could recycle other plastics. I see the recycling sign on yoghurt pots for example and although many go to a children's nursery and therefore get re-used, I still feel more could be done to recycle that type of plastic.

OH........ Silly me.... ;-0(

I really thought you meant a basket basket!
what kind of an idiot am I? please ladies... no answers!

But even the plastic baskets are not a great idea, and as Jeanette said.... bet it was a man who thought it up!!

Probably cheaper than the boxes...

Sally Moonchild Report 28 Oct 2007 11:39

Deanna, it is a plastic basket, not a wicker one.....with a little handle, like you would get in a supermarket.....and brown,

I did wonder if the kids would take a shine to them, but so far so good....
