Well Carol, I was one of the neglectful parents......brought my kids up and read Dr. Spock.....they were bathed, fed and put down for the night when babies.......tea, play with Dad, baths and bed early when they were young......and everything else on your list....

I am sorry to say that I have brought up 3 kids who are all hard working loving and down to earth sensible people, and bringing up their children successfully too.......mind you my DiL who is not due for 10 weeks yet, said about putting the babies out in the fresh air.....and I said yes, I did, fresh air knocked them out......so fresh air does harm now....

I also used to blend down our meals, including roast dinners and put them in tupperware little dishes and froze them.......poor little things.....they all have healthy appetites and are the correct weight......oh dear.....why is it we always get things wrong.....

No wonder Social Services are overworked!!
They'd be better off, instead of chastising parents who put their babies out in the garden, looking for children that never go out and asking themselves why?

I remember measles and chickenpox parties too!

A happy kid is a mucky kid is what my mum always said...

She still made sure I washed and cleaned me teeth every day, and had a bath before bed.

I was always up a tree or on my bike somewhere, my legs were covered in cuts and bruises, clothes would be patched, and I used to go to the shop to buy my dad his fags (spent the change on sweets), had to wait until Christmas or Birthday for new toys, and sometimes got sent to bed with no tea for being naughty.

OMG wasn't I ill treated!

We used to have measles parties to make sure all the kids got them ! Our doctor told mum off for keeping me too clean. The girl I sat next to in class wore a body brace after Polio.
Greatest invention ever... CALPOL!

Put them into prams in the garden, wrapped up +fly & cat nets, to sleep in the fresh air, whilst you were indoors. YES

Once fed, winded & changed, put them into cot/pram & if they cried, let them cry for a little while hoping that they would give up & go to sleep. NO

Feed your Babies 4hourly, no less than 3 & a half hours between feeds. NO - my boobs hurt too much!!

When preparing their milk/puree – add sugar/salt N/A - Breast fed. But the hospital took one baby away and fed her water & sugar against my wishes *could I sue?*

Make up feeds for 24hrs & put into the fridge N/A
Put butter on teething rusks NO
Wind them by patting their backs YES - How are you meant to do it?

Give their little ‘bots’ a bit of air – laying on a towel/blanket- on the floor with no nappy to kick YES and out in the garden. They continued to strip off until they were about 5 - because they enjoyed it!!!

Put reins on Toddlers YES - it meant they could get out of the pushchair in town centres and walk without getting lost

Allow your children to watch TV for more than 1hour a day. NO didn't have a TV until they were 3 & 6

What organisation has come up with this?
My other crimes were:
Drinking a bottle of stout every evening whilst pregnant and whilst breast feeding them - doctors orders :o)
Breast feeding them in bed - didn't manage to kill either of them.
Had open fires
Let them near our ducks, and pick up worms etc from the garden.
They drank unpasteurised milk
Played in hay bales
Allowed them to play in the garden, where they would strip off and cover themselves in mud.
I also made them walk one and a half miles to and from school, I very selfishly didn't go and buy a 4x4 for the purpose.

Strangely, at 24 and 27, they are healthy, don't have asthma, aren't overweight and have no fillings!!

Where did I go wrong??????

Nooo would never do that

I understand what you are saying...but there are some who suggest you leave them to cry until their next next feed in 4 hr time. All day and all night...without any contact.

edited to add...I've never done this to my children....but this is only my own style of parenting. People are different.

Yes that is clearly too long to leave a baby crying, but to let them have a bit of a scream once a day is fine, good for them...it doesn't mean something is wrong, but they are learning to use their little lungs.

Most babies like a good scream in the afternoon or evening...you can tell if is more than just exercising the lungs.

Sue from Wakefield Report 26 Oct 2007 21:38

If you watch that programme of the 3 woman advocating their own style of parenting....there is one who instructs you to leave your baby to cry in the garden.

Not for a little while though....until the next feed in 4 hours time. All day every day.

She also advocates you only have 10mins cuddle time a day....no more than 10mins.

I think it's barbaric.

Well today I was told that all of the above ‘could’ be now classed as neglect/abuse!
