Mum used to buy boiling chickens ages ago.....and used them in her broths and soups, and always had a good stock-pot going, which would last for ages and be the basis for all soups and stocks......all the meat bones, raw veg etc would go in, and as long as it was boiled every day it was OK......but unless it was looked after it had to be thrown, otherwise you could get food poisoning....

I don't do this, but my Sis has a stock-pot going now and again......and she hasn't poisoned anyone......yet.....

Thanks Lulli and Daff.................I am really careful with pork and chicken, I know they are dodgy unless cooked and/or reheated properly.

Kitty, I always use the highest setting on my slow cooker for chicken soups or stews, but I make a pure stock in a large pan.. that is only when I am chucking in all the bones, skin etc and I have even been known to use the remnants of the ready cooked chooks you buy hot from the store, to boil for stock. Much nicer than stock cubes if you have the time todo it.

I have a great recipe for chicken Curry Puss....

Pick up a chicken from the rotisserie at Tescos...

Buy a jar of Pataks Tikka Masala....

Take the chicken off bones and mix with sauce...

Freeze....

Use chicken bones with an onion, carrot or any fresh veg and boil up......strain off liquid for stock.....I use the empty Sweet and Sour jars and Pataks Curry jars for the stock and put in freezer for gravies....

I don't think I have a cat in whotsits chance of getting on Britain's Best Dish.....but it does taste nice....

PS....I do the same ..... only with Uncle Bens Sweet and Sour...

Hi Puss.. a boiling chicken used to be the old chickens that had stopped laying eggs. They were often a bit tough, so needed to be boiled (as in soups, stews, curries etc) for a long time to tenderise them. The soups and stews from them were out of this world!!

*prints thread off*

Lulli..................I will have to try that one.

I have a slow cooker which even I can't go wrong with ..........well I did, but that's another story.

Would it be alright to cook the soup in that do you know.........or would it be dangerous because of slowly reheating the chicken?
