Again Mo I agree, its not that I wouldnt enjoy having the sanctity of the sabbath, but if we all stated that we would not work Sundays I fear the Job we two do would cause an awful lot of problems for other people

Good point Juliecat...I'll put that to him. I must admit, the 99p price tag does get my goat too...

TW if your son got the chance to abolish all coins under 10p that would mean that when things went up they would have to go up by at least 10p ie a loaf of bread would have to go from 90p to £1 instead of from 90p to 93p.

As for working on Sundays there have always been people who have had to work on Sundays.

Correct will be and are becoming another American state.

True no one puts a gun to peoples head (not sure I am liking the wording here Jean) but ... if you have a job and are told you have to work weekends then you have to work weekends. You cannot say to your employer sorry don't do weekends.

You do no have a choice.

Jeanette, I completely agree with that.

I too made the choice not to work on a Sunday, not to shop on a Sunday, and to have my family round the table on a Sunday...if not the rest of the week.

We went out for days in the countryside, I taught my kids to cook, from raw ingredients, not from packets, taught them where food comes from, what is good for them (common sense, not government guidelines), and now they do this for their own children.

In other words, if kids these days do not know how to entertain themselves, don't know how to cook, have no family values, shop and work on Sundays and treat it like any other day of the week, then that is how they have been brought up.

This brings me to something my son said yesterday, just before he went home.

If he became Prime Minister, the first thing he would do would be to abolish all coins with a value of less than 10p, thus stopping shops conning people with thier 'under a tenner' type pricing, which actually means £9.99.

The second thing he woudl do would be to abolish bank holidays, except for religious occasions, Easter and Christmas, because it is only people who work the standard 9-5 weekdays that really benefit from this, medical, agricultural and emergency staff have no benefits whatsoever from bank holidays.

I think that families that can Kitty do, on the most part, sit for meals together, so its quite a broad statement for someone to make to say that no one does that anymore. We do live in changing times, even so I like you find it easier if we all eat together.

I don't see anyone holding a gun to your head telling you that you have to go shopping on a weekend!

We still manage to go out at weekends to the seaside, for a walk, to visit people etc. We still sit round the table for Sunday lunch...well most evening meals too actually.

My children still go out and play. They know how to cook and where food comes from...other than out of a packet.

If you don't want to work on a Sunday, don't apply for a job that entails working on a Sunday.

YOU have the choice to do what YOU want to do and bring your family up in the way YOU want to.

From a medical family so rotas were just what you were told.

Nowadays we do try to make Sunday special with church, rugby training and a walk when we can.

Joe - children do not want to eat around the table, the relations are too busy or too far away to come round and eat lunch. This is the sign of the times unfortunately.

As children we used to be out playing nowsdays they are in on the computer or X-box or whatever.

We used to go to school on the bus with the rest of the children - nowaday they a driven.

Sorry to say Joe but our past in now well in the past and the future is not very good. These pampered children will run the country one day and that will be that.

Food will have to be not from the earth but made by someone in a chemical enviroment and all clothes with have to designer but that is all then know.

Remember the days when most shops were closed on a Sunday and probably had half day closure some time during the week ? It seems that condition has now gone forever and withn it the joys of Sundays, or even weekends.

I guess that the power of the supermarkets has led to the disappearance of the 'week-end' and instead of an outing to the seaside or countryside people now flock to the retail parks - Bluewater, Lakeside etc., and have such fun walking round the same shops that we used to find in most High Streets and then greatest fun is finding the Food Mart and indulging in fast foods.

Where did life go ? Where did the week-ends go ?

Remember Aunty X visiting you for lunch together with her brood and how they all looked so smart while we polished everything in the 'front room' and put on our 'best' ?

Children/teenagers entertaining themselves in the parks, swimming pools, woodlands etc., Many belonged to local scout or guide groups, which generally resulted in a visit to church at least once a month. The bands playing in the park. Saturday afternoons and Sundays were for entertainment in many guises. Nowadays children are pulled around the retail parks and teenagers don't know what to do with themselves.

Go over the Channel to, say, Boulogne where there is a market on Saturdays - BUT get there after 1p.m and you have missed it and you will find few shops open. And where are the locals ? enjoying themselves in all the things that we did at one time. And this prevails through most of France and Germany and probably other countries where the supermarkets have not got a stranglehold. Even the mighty Carrefour which is the 2nd largest supermarket chain inthe world (after Walmart) does not feel the need to open at all hours - save for the Calais branch in Cite Europe which opens (for the fickle Brits) on a few Sundays before Christmas - otherwise Sunday is a day of rest. Go around that country and see families enjoying Sundays whether that be in visiting the rellies, group cycling (and other past-times) or just going for a stroll in the park, up the high street or ........ a real sense of leisure. And how pleasureable to drive on a Sunday in Europe - generally fewer cars - whilst here the reverse is happening, fewer lorries blocking the main roads .........

Now, having locked thousands of people into working on Sundays iot seems that we need more ... and probably more and more. Is it any wonder that so many people want to come to G B where they are able to work for more money from a population only too willing to line the pockets of anyone who has the will to work at all times.

Latest request is for doctor's surgeries to be opened at all hours - Why ?? Next we will want car mechanics .. and then ?? Post offices, mail deliveries, Council offices, builders, dentists ............ or even your archives, the GRO ............

Now there will be the usual barrage of reasons Why it should be so.
When I was working for a travel agent and later a bank - many years ago - we fought to end working on Saturday mornings - I wonder why we bothered.
