world war 2 food!

No bananas during the war. I remember my 1st banana I thought it would be crisp like an apple and took a bite- got a shock when I found it was soft.

Mum used to make apple sandwiches thinly sliced on bread, my favorite one were condensed milk on bread lovely!

I remember........

Always porridge first thing in the morning

Rabbit Stew,

Pearl Barley and vegetables

All kinds of vegetable soup/broth eaten in deep bowls with stottie bread

Fish of all kinds

Bread with hot milk

Banana sandwiches (mams had to queue for fruit)

Will never know how my Mam managed to feed the family when rationed, the women were marvels!!

Hi Christine ,that reminds me of someone I worked with who got his tie caught in a shredder and he had to shout for help cos he couldnt reach the switch to turn of the machine,someone had to cut his tie off to "save "him,wasnt funny but we ended up laughing hysterically at him.
Do you mean those little animal bars of chocolate?

I can remember sneaking a spoonful of cocoa powder to try and nearly choked to death-see what happens when we do things we 're not supposed to do!

I work at a primary school in year 4 and we are learning about world war 2-when the children have finished their topics on it we are going to organise a victory party for them providing food that was eaten in the 1940's-now, because I am soooooooo young I do not know what was avaialble then-any ideas please?
