I feel very sad if in this day and age we cant look beyond the colour of someones skin, the body they are in, sex or religion.

One of my best freinds is razor sharp, increadibly intelligent, funny and shares to many of my passions and interests. Apart from the fact he is still a punk in his mid 40's!!

Unfortunatly I now live a few hundred miles from him so we only tend to chat online or the phone these days but used to reguarly go to concerts and out for meals.

We look an odd couple in public as I am perceived as by strangers as 'a tall business woman' and he is perceived as a person non grata due to his physical disabilities (the punk look dont help lol).

In restuarant once the waiter ignored him and asked me what he will have to drink - and I told them to bloody ask him themselves - how do I know - do I look like a mind reader??

Fortunatly he has a great SOH and pointed out he was taking 'me' out for the day to intergrate me with society. It was so funny I could have died!

over the years i have worked with people with alzheimers, ms , cancers , manic depresives , downs, old age ,parkinsons my ex brother in law was diagnosed at the age of 36. i have been bitten, sworn at , kicked and physically threatened. i have fed people and cleaned up everything that can come out of a person if i couldnt see past all of that and see the person for themselves i would not have carried on for 20 years. i always like to think that if it was a member of my family they would be treated with the same respect. i would quite gladly join you for a cuppa dizzy d.

Gwen, you are one special person. It was lovely talking to you today, but shame the signal is so bad here I kept missing bits of the conversation. I hope you have a good time on the 15th, we will think of you and if your ears burn, we are talking about you lol.

In answer to your question about sitting with you, yes I would sit there so long as you or the person there didn't mind.

Yes l would too Dizzi D. l used to work with adults with learning difficulties and physical disabilities. l used to go on holidays with them and had the best times ever in the New Forrest(apple pie beds - lol) - brilliant!!!! l also took residents out for shopping days, coffee etc and one day we were sitting in McDonalds in Worthing with a young lad that had great difficulties eating, could'nt talk, he communicated with a battery operated device - he dribbled too bless him - a lady behind me was so rude saying "how can anyone like that be allowed in here is beyond me" - so l politely said"you are beyond me and very sad". So yes l would sit next to some like that, so would my OH and my kids:o))))) You take care - shame your not coming to Llanelli:o((

Deb ( Steel City) Report 5 Sep 2007 22:34

One of my dearest friends was born with severe Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) When he was born almost every bone in his body was broken while coming through the birth canel. As a result many major parts of his body did not develop properly. He was only 3"4" with legs that did not work and most of his features were distorted in some form or another. Was confined to a wheel chair all his life. It used to break my heart when peeps would start at him because of his disability some even referred to him as a freak.

He was the kindest gentlest man and had a sense of humour that was so contagious we were always laughing.

When he was diagnosed with cancer his humour never gave way. He planned his lifes exit down to the last detail. One of my fondest memories was sitting for hours with him while he discussed the pros and cons of what size casket to order. In his words "Well the full size is a waste of good wood, the baby size (which he would have fit into) would insult his masculinity now the teen size would be okay as he was still young at heart". Told us several days later he had made his decision but told us it was a surprise.

Several weeks later when he passed we were giggling when going into the funeral home not knowing what his final decision on the casket size was. There were a few fleeting moments where we tried to bring the giggles under control but then realized that he wanted us to celebrate his life not mourn his passing.

Won't bother me one bit if someone has a disablity or not we all deserve to be treated with respect no matter what our affliction may be.

Dizzy knows my answer to this! xx

When daughter was diagnosed she lost her sight. Whilst in hospital there was a smashing young woman in the room with her who was blind.

When the meal was brought in the nurse said "the potatoes are at 2 o'clock, the meat is at 6 0'clock and the veg are at 10 o'clock"

The reply from the young woman was "That's great but where's the bleedin' plate?"

From then on we knew how to treat disabilities - with compassion and when appropriate with laughter and jokes.

Sue xx
