Results for Kingston, Jamaica (17.93N, 76.78W): The eye of the storm is about 181 miles (292 km) away. If the system keeps moving at its current speed of 18 mph and directly towards you, it will take around 10.1 hours (Sunday, August 19 at 6:06PM EDT) to reach you. You are already experiencing strong winds. Better take cover instead of sitting behind the computer! |

Just read this!! CNN has a reporter in Kingston to cover Dean. They have just announced that many of the shelters that have been opened are empty - we are only hours away from some really nasty weather and many of the people who should be in the shelters are hours away from them. Come on people - time to get serious about Dean, even if he misses land, this one is no joke. The problem is many Jamaicans, are use to this type of weather, and just carry on as usual. This time, because of lack of communications, ie, no elecric, I don't think they realise how bad it is going to be, like we do,in the ourside World!!! Lilly |

many thanks for your thoughts, they are most welcome, the lastest update is: The eye of the storm might now stay just south of Jamaica, and about 60 miles south of Cayman. This is a great improvement relative to the eye going straight over Jamaica or Grand Cayman. However, nothing is certain, hurricanes are known to wobble a bit left and right. Also, regardless, with the eye passing this close it will be a destructive storm, no question about it. Just hoping it wobbles more south so that the highest winds stay away. Also, the storm surge will be very dangerouse for the low lying area.! maybe, just maybe their prayers are being answeredLilly |

Thanks for all your thoughts, I am sitting here 'filling up' as I know what is to come, I have been caught in Hurricanes and its very scarey...I am just praying the eye of the storm moves over a bit, if not. it is going to be the worst Hurrican that has hit Jamaica in over 100 years!. I can see the people now, all locked in their Shelters, which are mostly the Churches, all on their knees, praying like mad, as they really believe in the power of God!!!..God bless them, and may it pass quickly.......Lilly |

To day Jamaica is exected to be torn apart by Hurrican Dean, roofs will be ripped of, business are to be destroyed, this is still such a 'Poor' but beauiful Country. Commuications are amost down, so no contact from the outside world..the Electric, which at the best of times, is 'pot luck' has now been completely turned off...most of the tourtists, have now gone....but all of my Son in Law family and lots of friends are still there, please keep them in your thoughts, it might well be weeks, before I know if they are safe..I can only pray for them....they lost everything a couple of years back, and now face this again so soon!
