But why has it been nudged up? All I can say, and I read the first post before realising it was so old, nothing has changed. Cyclists are still riding through lights.

What has all this got to do with genealogy?

Sorry to hear about this. My little boy is on his cycle wise training to day i was sorry to see many children miss out on this free course. I did it when I was 10 and have been riding in all weathers since for the last 20 years with out 1 accident, I do think all children should do this test before they can ride on the road.As it might stop fools like the one who almost hit you

I am afraid we have it all here. We have a cycle lane on our main road that pedestrians (especially children) think they can use as an overflow for the path when they want to walk 4/5 abreast. We also have a set of traffic lights at a crossroads on the main road with a pedestrian crossing, the pedestrians (adults and children alike) think it is fun to push the button and cross the road before the lights change, leaving all cars waiting for nothing. We have cyclists who think that the lights do not apply to them and cycle through reguardless or use the path to bypass the red lights nearly knocking down pedestrians and we have the car drivers (if thats the word for some of them!) who decide to see if they can jump the red lights before they turn green!!! at the expense of any of the afore mentioned people including an absolutly horrendous amount of near misses with the parents and children trying to cross to get to the local nursery, infant and junior schools. I could go on forever about this (yes even longer than I already have!!!!). A now wound up Sue:-(

Maz (the Royal One) in the East End 9256 Report 8 Jun 2004 21:18

I have seen both sides in the last two days. Cyclists who think the Highway Code/traffic lights/pedestrian crossings do not apply to them. They will maybe learn their lesson when someone who DOES have a green light runs them over. In the last couple of months I have noticed that an increasing number of drivers must be colour blind as they completely ignore red traffic lights - particularly at large roundabouts. When I point this out to the pratt who has just sailed out in front of me when I have a green light (by prologned use of my horn lol) it is ME who gets two fingers and called a f***** g w****r - if you get my drift. Makes my blood boil! Don't think half of these people have even had a lesson, let alone passed a test. Oh and what about those who don't strap their kids in. Saw one the other day with the roof down and a child not even 2 climbing all over the rear seat passengers. Not a braincell amongst them and they obviously don't give a damn about their children. There is NO excuse for this. Maz. XX Feel better now lol!!!

Thank you all for your support, and Bob I really do appreciate there are good cyclists and I know one or two bad apples don't make the whole bunch, I was just so angry this morning I had to sound off somewhere. I do think cyclists should have something that identifies them though maybe then they would be a little more careful, or maybe not does not seem to make a lot of difference to some car drivers and also pedestrians could do with a lesson or 2 in crossing roads. There I feel soooo much better. Gen x

First I cycle 11 miles each way to work every day sun or rain. I must cover aprox 6000 miles a year. I agree with everything you say. Of course we must ride within the highway code. It is cyclist such as the ones you refer to that give us all a bad name! I admit I do ride on the pavement over short distances but always give way to pedestrians. Now the compaints. Since when has an amber light meant 'get your foot down because you will have a red soon' I thought it meant ' slow down and prepare to stop'. I have stopped at lights only to have drivers race past me as the lights turn red. The other one is for 'Sorry I didnt see you' read ' What do you mean I should look for other road users?' Yes I do get abuse from both drivers and other so called cyclists that I advise of their wrongdooings. Please do not treat us all the same, some of us do know what we are doing. Bob

How much Road Tax do THEY pay? (I'm a good/careful occasional cyclist + used to have a scooter)

I totally agree with all the points raised. I live in the country and often have trouble overtaking them as they cycle not two but three across - and its my fault apparently from the abuse that they give me!!!

Funnily enough, going home last night on the motorbike it took me over 3 miles in London to overtake a cyclist. Every time I stopped at a traffic light he carried merrily on. With no police on the roads and no means of identifying them they can, and do, just whatever they like.

Hi Gen, I hope you have recovered from you ordeal. I know exactly what you mean about cyclists. What makes me mad is when I see young children riding on the roads without a clue about the highway code and road safety, and when I say "young", I mean from six years upwards....No helmet on or any other protective clothing. They are a real danger on our roads and I would like to know where their parent's sense is to allow them to do this. I'm getting mad just thinking about it now!!!! Ann

Hi Gen Just adding my sympathy, I bet you're really shaking! Have a quick tot of something and a sit down. We have one cyclist in our town who is a nightmare - he's a really old bloke who hasn't got a clue and has caused many near misses. Enjoy the rest of the day, hope the sun is shining where you are. Mandy :)

First let me apologise to those cyclists among you who do observe the highway code, but in my area don't think there is one. This morning I was taking my grandson to school (walk/2 buses/walk) I live on a main road which has pedestrian lights. My grandson has been taught since before he could walk to look for the green man and then it would (in theory) be safe to cross. Today, and not for the first time, we went to cross and a cyclist came flying along, did he stop, did he heck and when I shouted at him I got the two fingers and "You f****** saw me coming" Maybe I did but I had the right to cross, all the cars had stopped, lights were red. Shaking with temper but still in one piece, we boarded a bus, just up the road another set of pedestrian lights. Bus stopped to let a woman cross another cyclist flew down the inside of the bus and missed the woman by inches, did the cyclist stop? Nope she got to the crossroads and then went up on the pavement and used the PEDESTRIAN CROSSING to get across the road safetly. I was under the impression that the highway code included cyclists so why don't they follow it? Right I feel better now and once again all you cyclists out there who do follow the code I apologise but you are very few and far between. Gen
