Hi Gwyneth Thanks for your reply, I'm just back from taking my son to college and seen your reply. There are so many things I had forgotten..school dinners, (there were no sandwiches or packed lunches in those days!!) Science lessons!! i remember one girl spilt sulphuric acid on her tights and they just disintegrated!! God knows how she didn't burn her skin off!!! The teacher throwing blackboard cleaners at someone, and if you didn't duck and it hit you instead, tough!

Just popping in to see if it needs a tidy. I would have joined you but hubby set out for work and returned as there were no trains running. Cramped my style somewhat as I busied with the washing and ironing, pretending that was the norm. for me. Julie and Gwynne I went to that school too! We had to learn 'Oh my darling Clementine' in Latin. Got summoned to a senior mistress' severe reprimand, when my friends and I were seen speaking to a lad from our youth club. It was an all girls school and 'that sort of behaviour' was very much frowned upon.

Gwynne God knows! I never did get the hang of that one. I was more into hockey. But it used to wreak havoc with your ankles! Thinking back, we even had to sing some hymns in assembly and Christmas Carols in Latin. How sad was that???

Good grief, we even used the same text book! And Lacrosse - what's that all about? Gwynne

Hi Julie, I think we went to the same school. Did you have to do Latin as well? Gwynne

Julie

Julie Report 23 Feb 2005 07:56

Gwynne Tell me about it...1967 to 1972...The teachers wore mortar boards and gowns..we had to walk 'NOT RUN GIRL!!' on the left hand side of a corridor, and we couldn't go into a classrom without a teacher giving us permission. When we answered a question in lessons we had to stand to answer then sit straight back down. Mind you, wouldn't do some of these scallies nowadays any harm!...Oh my God! I sound like my Mother!!

Thanks Lesley, And another thing, Julie, my boyfriend when I was in the Upper VI used to meet me after school in his sports car and the Head said he couldn't as. I was 18 for ****'s sake. He told her it was a public road and he could park where he liked. Her face was a picture. Gwynne

Hi Julie, I should have said - this was a girls' Grammar school. Thanks God it's a comp now. The worst 7 years of my life. Gwynne

Julie

Julie Report 23 Feb 2005 07:50

Gwynne Primary school wasn't too bad compared to the Grammar School I went to at 11 yrs old...If we didn't wear our 'Baker Boy' hat (What were they all about???) going to and from school, any sixth former could give you a detention!! and if you ate sweets or (God forbid) chew chewing gum in the street, you were deemed as 'bringing the school into disrepute' I ask you! Can you imagine trying to enforce THAT rule nowadays???

Hi Lesley, It isn't cancelled for sure - the guitarist has an ear infection and if he's OK this morning it will go ahead. But if we get loads of snow ..................... Gwynne

Hi Julie, I was threatened with detention for wearing a furry bonnet thing to school. We were supposed to wear the regulation juliet cap. I protested that I was wearing it under my furry bonnet. My Mum wrote a strong letter to the Head saying that sometimes I had to wait up to half an hour for the bus (we lived miles away) and that if I couldn't wear my furry bonnet she'd keep me off school. So I was allowed to wear it until I got on the bus. Gwynne

Gwynne...Yep I think you're right. When I was at school in the early 60's the boys had to wear short trousers whatever the weather and girls had to wear skirts. Boy were everyones knees red!!!...The killer was when the snow came over the top of your wellies!!... Julie x

Hello, Julie, Welcome to the morning cuppa thread. Dave, when I was a girl we had to put our wellies on and trudge to school. And keep our coats on all day if the heating wasn't working. By the time I started teaching the schools would close if the heating was broken. We're breeding a nation of wusses. lol Gwynne
